The assistance was provided in areas of Dien Bien province severely affected by floods. Each household received between VND 3 million and VND 12 million, depending on the extent of damage and the number of children in the family. The assistance is intended to help households purchase essential necessities in the aftermath of the disaster, including food, medicine, school supplies for children and basic medical items.

Dien Bien is a mountainous province frequently affected by heavy rains, flash floods and landslides during the rainy season, particularly in highland, remote and isolated areas. Many households rely mainly on agriculture for their livelihoods, so damage to homes, crops and livestock directly affects their livelihoods, especially for families with children, women, older people and other vulnerable groups.

Immediately after the disaster, World Vision International in Viet Nam worked with local authorities to assess the situation and compile a list of severely affected and vulnerable households to prioritize for assistance. The criteria considered included the severity and scale of damage, the number of children and household members, disability status, as well as whether households were headed by a single person or classified as poor. The verification and assistance process was coordinated with the Dien Bien Red Cross Society and local authorities to ensure that resources reached the right beneficiaries in a transparent and timely manner.

According to Pham The Kien, Vice Chairman of the Nam Nen Commune People’s Committee in Dien Bien province, recent floods caused extensive damage to infrastructure and crops, directly affecting local residents’ lives. The commune authorities coordinated with World Vision International in Viet Nam and the Dien Bien Red Cross Society to conduct community outreach and disaster-warning training, while also providing timely material assistance.

Nguyen Van Phong, Program Manager of the Muong Cha Area Program and representative of World Vision International in Viet Nam, said the assistance not only helps alleviate people’s immediate difficulties but also demonstrates solidarity with local residents and children during the post-disaster recovery process. He expressed hope that the support would help families reduce their losses and gradually stabilize their lives.

Hien, a local resident who received assistance, said her family would use the money to buy rice and essential items needed after the disaster. Sa, one of the 102 supported households, said information about the relief program was clearly communicated, residents received adequate guidance before receiving assistance, and the beneficiary verification process went smoothly.

Alongside emergency relief, World Vision International in Viet Nam is also carrying out community outreach activities on disaster prevention, mitigation and response, helping improve people’s awareness and preparedness skills, particularly among children.
