On July 16-17, 2026, prolonged heavy rainfall struck Lai Chau province, triggering severe flash floods, torrential floods and landslides. According to statistics, 1,186 houses across the province were affected, while more than 697 hectares of crops were damaged. The disaster also damaged 46 power poles, nine schools and satellite school sites, 20 irrigation facilities, four domestic water supply systems, as well as numerous roads and other infrastructure works. Total losses are estimated at approximately VND 550 billion.

Muong Than commune was the epicenter of the disaster. A flash flood that occurred on the morning of July 17 claimed 7 lives, left 1 person missing and injured 8 others. Around 200 households suffered housing damage, while nearly 300 hectares of rice fields, crops and aquaculture areas were washed away or buried. Many transport works, irrigation facilities, schools and electricity infrastructure were also damaged. Losses in the commune alone are estimated at more than VND 250 billion.

In response to the extensive damage caused by heavy rains, flash floods and landslides in Lai Chau province, and in keeping with the tradition of solidarity, mutual support and compassion toward disaster-affected communities, the Standing Board of the Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee approved a policy to assist Lai Chau province. Accordingly, the Gia Lai Provincial Relief Mobilization Committee transferred VND 2 billion from the Provincial Relief Fund to support the people of Lai Chau in recovering from the impacts of the natural disaster, flooding and landslides in accordance with regulations.

The assistance not only reflects the spirit of solidarity and mutual support, as well as the care and sense of responsibility of the Party organization, authorities and people of Gia Lai province toward Lai Chau province, but also serves as a source of encouragement for disaster-affected communities, helping residents overcome their losses, restore their livelihoods and stabilize their lives as soon as possible.
