On the morning of August 26 in Hanoi, the Ministry of Public Security held a ceremony to hand over the President’s Decisions to Working Group No. 9, comprising nine People’s Public Security officers, before their departure to carry out United Nations peacekeeping duties at UNMISS in the Republic of South Sudan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Senior Lieutenant General Pham The Tung, Member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of Public Security, emphasized that participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations is a major, consistent and strategic policy of the Party and State. It reflects Vietnam’s independent and self-reliant foreign policy oriented toward peace, cooperation and development, while affirming Vietnam as an active and responsible member of the international community.

According to the Deputy Minister, the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress continues to elevate the policy of participating in United Nations peacekeeping operations as an important component of the country’s foreign policy and its approach to safeguarding the Fatherland from an early stage and from afar. Resolution No. 22-NQ/TW on the National Security Strategy also identifies the intensified deployment of military, civilian and public security forces to participate in peacekeeping operations and multilateral cooperation mechanisms as an important task in the new period.

Deputy Minister Pham The Tung highly valued the training, preparation, selection and provision of necessary conditions for the force before deployment. He requested that relevant units continue to focus on scientific and systematic training; proactively select high-quality personnel; ensure appropriate regimes and policies; and pay attention to and encourage the families of officers during their overseas assignments.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, Working Group No. 9 is the Ministry’s first working group to deploy nine officers to the mission, the largest number ever assigned to a single working group. The selection of the nine officers by the United Nations brings the total number of Vietnamese People’s Public Security officers serving at UNMISS to 17, the highest number ever. Notably, amid the United Nations’ ongoing personnel reductions at its missions, the invitation extended to nine Vietnamese Public Security officers to serve at a single mission demonstrates the recognition of the force’s capabilities and professionalism.

Congratulating the officers on receiving their assignments, Deputy Minister Pham The Tung emphasized that the mission is both an honor and a responsibility, as each officer represents the image of the People’s Public Security force and Vietnam in the international environment. He urged the officers to uphold their political steadfastness, ethical qualities, spirit of solidarity and sense of responsibility; apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired through training; and quickly familiarize themselves with the situation in the area of deployment while adapting to weather conditions, diseases, as well as security and safety challenges at the mission.

The city has mobilised significant social resources to improve living and training conditions, while providing encouragement and strengthening the morale of forces stationed and performing duties along the nation’s borders and at sea.
