In the context of growing volatility in the global economic and geopolitical environment, Vietnam’s experience in pursuing a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance and expanding relations with other countries drew attention from progressive friends in Canada.

These views were shared on the sidelines of an annual event organised by the Communist Party of Canada Marxist-Leninist (CPC ML) in Ottawa.

Sharing with the VNA correspondent in Canada, member of CPC ML Margaret Villamizar said what impressed her about Vietnamese people was their steadfast determination to fight for independence and the right to self-determination.

According to her, throughout history, Vietnam underwent numerous struggles to safeguard its independence and sovereignty, a process that demonstrated the Vietnamese people’s organisational capacity, creativity, and resilience.

Villamizar said that spirit continues to be reflected in Vietnam’s national development and international relations today. Vietnam remains committed to deciding its own affairs, while building friendships with other countries and harnessing the strength and human resources of its people to shape its development.

Regarding Vietnam’s role in promoting peace, Villamizar said the country is making important contributions both regionally and internationally.

According to her, Vietnam's remaining relations with all countries, while emphasizing on the United Nations Charter and international law, are particularly significant at a time when the world is facing conflicts and instability.

Villamizar said that Vietnam’s experience also demonstrated the importance of maintaining an independent foreign policy, prioritising diplomacy and negotiation, respecting international law, and building relations among nations on the basis of equality and non-imposition.

These assessments reflect the interest of international friends in Vietnam’s independent and self-reliant foreign policy.

In the context of a rapidly changing global environment, Vietnam continues to remain steadfast in principle, while flexible in approach, maintaining constructive relations with other countries and safeguarding the right to self-determination on matters related to national interests, thereby helping enhance the country’s standing in the international arena.

The CPC ML event at Beechwood Cemetery is an annual commemorative event of the Party and also an occasion for Party members to continue exchanging views on issues of common concern, including peace, independence, self-determination, and solidarity among peoples.

In those stories, Vietnam’s experience in safeguarding independence, maintaining self-reliance, and promoting peaceful relations continues to attract the attention of Canadian friends.
