Speaking during the meeting, Senior Lieutenant-General Le Quy Vuong, Deputy Minister of Public Security, said that prisoners who are serving time-limit sentences or those who are serving life sentences with a reduction to time-limit sentences will enjoy the amnesty.
Accordingly, the amnesty will be granted to some 16,000-17,000 prisoners, making it the biggest-ever so far, according to Major-General Nguyen Ngoc Bang, Head of the General Department for Enforcement of Criminal Sentences and Judicial Assistance under the Ministry of Public Security.
He added that foreign prisoners who satisfy the demand for amnesty will also be released ahead of schedule in accordance with Vietnam’s laws.
The amnesty shows a great guideline which reveals the clemency and humanitarian policies of the Vietnamese Party and State for those who are sentenced, encouraging them to study and practice to become helpful citizens of society, Major-General Bang added.
The list of prisoners expected to enjoy amnesty is scheduled to be submitted to the State President for consideration and decision in late August.
Directing the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked relevant agencies to ensure the sense of justice and objectiveness during amnesty./.
