India's tank maker looking to go global, eyes partners

India's Armoured Vehicles Nigam (AVANI) is actively seeking global channel partners to export its armoured platforms, spares, and support services to Africa, West Asia, and Southeast Asia. This initiative aligns with the government's export growth policy, contributing to a massive surge in defence exports from erstwhile Ordnance Factory Board entities, now exceeding ₹3,545 cr.
Armoured Vehicles Nigam (AVANI) is scounting for partners in Africa, West Asia, Central Asia and the Southeast who can help in exporting various platforms being manufactured by it besides a spares and support for armoured vehicles.
AVANI, which manufactures key platforms such as the indigenous Arjun Main Battle Tank, Russian-origin T-90 tanks, and BMP-2 infantry combat vehicles, has started exploring partnerships to boost exports in line with the government's push for defence indigenisation and global outreach, the report said.
In addition to armoured vehicles, the company supplies spares for a variety of Russian-origin systems, as well as naval guns and Kavach protection suites for warships-capabilities that could help it support friendly foreign nations operating similar equipment.
AVANI is one of the seven defence companies created from the restructuring of the former Ordnance Factory Board. Together, these entities have significantly ramped up their international footprint.
While combined exports in 2019-20 were just Rs 81 crore, provisional figures for 2024-25 indicate a sharp jump to over Rs 3,545 crore, driven by higher global demand for ammunition and explosives. Among them, Munitions India Limited has emerged as the top exporter, contributing nearly Rs 3,000 crore last fiscal, The Economic Times reported.
