Kommersant (Russia) described Vietnam’s 80th National Day as being celebrated with “the biggest parade in many decades,” noting that the streets of Hanoi were covered with flags and flowers, packed with tens of thousands of people carrying flags, most wearing red shirts.

“State-of-the-art military equipment took part in the parade, including tanks, missiles, helicopters, and fighter jets,” Kommersant reported. “Thousands of Vietnamese soldiers and foreign contingents, including those from Russia and China, joined the event. The Vietnam Navy also staged a parade at sea with submarines and frigates.”

Kommersant quoted General Secretary To Lam’s speech at the ceremony, stressing that Vietnam is “resolute and persistent in defending independence, freedom, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and every sacred inch of the Fatherland.”

Singapore’s Channel News Asia described tens of thousands of people crowding the streets of Hanoi, watching advanced military equipment ranging from Su-30 fighter jets, Mi-171 helicopters to domestically produced drones.

Britain’s Reuters called it “the biggest parade in many decades,” highlighting the strong sense of nationalism, with thousands of troops marching and showcasing the country’s most advanced military hardware such as armored vehicles, helicopters, and fighter jets.

Greg Poling, an expert at the US-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), noted that modernization of any country’s military faces numerous challenges, but Vietnam has overcome barriers and “is building an entirely self-contained military ecosystem.”

The Straits Times of Singapore observed that the parade demonstrated Vietnam’s armed forces moving toward modernization and diversifying defense resources. The paper emphasized this was the first time Vietnam’s naval power was publicly displayed - with submarines, warships, and naval aircraft - alongside ground and air demonstrations.

Gazeta Pravda, the newspaper of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, wrote that “Vietnam marks the 80th National Day in a new political, economic, and social reality.” It added that “Vietnam’s top leadership has launched a comprehensive reform program associated with truly revolutionary changes.”

The Laotian Times highlighted the socio-economic achievements exhibition held for the 80th National Day, under the headline “Vietnam Tells Its 80-Year Journey at a World Top 10 Exhibition Venue.” The article noted the exhibition was not only a celebration of the National Day but also an opportunity to look back at Vietnam’s historical journey, from President Ho Chi Minh’s reading of the Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1945, founding the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), to today’s socio-economic achievements during the Doi Moi and integration era.

According to the paper, the exhibition vividly depicted eight decades of Vietnam’s development, covering areas such as the economy, science and technology, defense, education, and culture, while reflecting everyday life through multiple perspectives. A notable feature emphasized by international media was the application of modern technologies, including virtual reality (VR), digital models, and interactive displays, providing visitors with an immersive experience of historical milestones. The article affirmed that through the exhibition, Vietnam aimed to send a message of openness, creativity, and aspiration for integration, while honoring the sacrifices of past generations who secured independence, freedom, and happiness for the nation.

Other activities also drew international media attention, such as a large-scale prisoner amnesty and cash support for citizens. Media outlets described these as part of Vietnam’s message of humanity and solidarity on this historic occasion.

Overall, international media stressed that the event highlighted the image of a Vietnam on the rise. It was not only an opportunity to commemorate a glorious history, but also an affirmation that today’s Vietnam is firmly advancing on the path of modernization and integration.
