During his talks with Under Secretary General of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov in New York on April 22, Lam said since its establishment nearly 74 years ago, the UN with 193 member states has affirmed its important role in ensuring sustainable peace and world order.
Vietnam recognises the UN’s significant role in strengthening coordination and linking global efforts to deal with terrorism more effectively, he said, adding that Vietnam has taken reaped success in implementing the UN’s global counter-terrorism strategy.
He said Vietnam will carry out the UN Security Council’s resolutions on terrorism prevention, stand ready to host international conferences on border control, join projects and initiatives on aviation security management and join the UN’s regional conferences scheduled for later this year in Belarus and the UN High-Level Conference on Counter-Terrorism in 2020.
According to Lam, Vietnam will take the role of ASEAN Chair in 2020 and will closely work with the UN together with other ASEAN member states in efforts to combat terrorists.
Vietnam wants to make further contributions to ensuring global peace and security and run for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure, he said.
Voronkov, for his part, spoke highly of work between the UN agencies and the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security in the fight against terrorism over the years, especially in personnel training, experience and information sharing, and joining radicalisation prevention projects, ensuring aviation security and preventing funding for terror activities.
The same day, Lam held a working session with the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the UN, detailing Vietnam’s security and order in early 2019 and the outcomes of work between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the UN over the years.
He lauded the mission for fully follow the Party and State’s external policy, serving as a bridge in diplomatic ties and promoting multilateral ties in perse areas.
Lam hoped the mission will urge the UN to work with Vietnamese agencies and the Ministry of Public Security to launch projects, especially assisting Vietnam in training and sharing of experience in addressing non-traditional security challenges.
