Plan International Vietnam to improve health, well-being of young people

According to the 2018 estimation of WHO, Vietnam is a fast-developing country but has substantial health challenges. In 2016, almost a quarter of those aged over 15 smoked tobacco.

The "Vietnam Young Health Program" project ceremony was launched by Plan International Vietnam and AstraZeneca Vietnam in Hanoi on June 19.

This global community investment program, initiated by AstraZeneca Group, focuses mainly on the promotion of common prevention activities for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as: cancers, diabetes, chronic lung diseases…. in the youth. The project is jointly carried out by Plan International Vietnam, The National Youth Center and The Hanoi Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

In Vietnam today, the youth accounts for one-third of the nations’ population – the highest rate ever recorded. This is an opportunity to develop the country in terms of both economical values and social welfare. In addition, the youth is at a critical age when it comes to effectively intervene, reduce the risks of NCDs and improve the overall health throughout ones’ lifespan.

According to the 2018 estimation of the World Health Organization, Vietnam has 549.800 deaths, of which NCDs account for approximately 77% (424,000 deaths). Patients, families and the national health system have been struggling to pay a large cost in treating NCDs.

Therefore, in support of the Vietnam Health Program – prioritizing the prevention of NCDs (2018-2030), Vietnam Young Health program's main objectives are to ensure that young people in Hanoi are well-educated in acknowledging high-risk behaviors; understanding necessary measurements to prevent NCDs while enabling them to make the right decisions for their own health in the context of improved health services, effective health systems, and a favorable policy environment.

The Young Health Program Vietnam will be implemented in 3 years from January 2019 to December 2021, aiming to improve the health and quality of life for young people – especially the ones between the ages 10-24 living in Ha Ba Trung district and Dong Anh district of Hanoi.

It will reach 46,358 direct beneficiaries, with an additional 100,000 indirect beneficiaries reached through wider awareness raising activities./.
