Population of heritage fokienia in Quang Nam province
Having existing for thousands of years, the largest fokienia (Fujian cypress) has a diameter of 3 meters. The population of this precious kind of tree has been recognised as heritage tree of Vietnam.
On May 10th, the Tay Giang district People’s Committee in the central province of Quang Nam held a ceremony to announce that a population of 725 perennial fokienia had been recognised as heritage trees of Vietnam.
Each of the 725 trees has a diameter of 1.5 meters or more.
The heritage trees are numbered. According to the district leaders, it takes nearly 2 days to visit the whole forest. The biggest trees have a diameter of 3 meters. Experts’ studies show that the trees are between 300 and 2,000 years old.
On average, the fokienia range from 30 to some 50 meters high. The population of fokienia was detected in 2010. This is considered the largest and most precious primeval forest of the southern Truong Son Range.
Having existing for thousands of years, many fokienia produce feet of strange shapes.
Fokienia wood is considered a precious wood in Vietnam as it provides typical perfume and is not easy to be destroyed by insects. As a result, it is used to produce artistic works and household commodities. It is an endangered species of Vietnam and was listed in the Vietnam Red Book in 1996.
Each fokienia tree provides tens of cubic meters of wood.
