The decision was made due to the product of Senegal found to be contaminated with the extremely destructive pests: the Trogoderma granarium Everts and Serratus Caryedon serratus Olivier.
These are two extremely dangerous weevil species listed on Vietnam’s plant quarantine and they have not appeared in the country’s territory. In particular, the Trogoderma granarium Everts was listed among the world's 100 most dangerous alien species.
The weevil could cause huge economic losses because it would directly affect the quality of agricultural products, as well as narrow the export markets open to Vietnam’s agricultural products if it penetrated the country.
The Ministry’s Plant Protection Department has sent notice to Senegal’s agency for plant protection under international rules and Vietnam’s regulations on plant quarantine.
The suspension will begin 60 days after the signing of the decision./.
