Vietnam-Netherlands Cooperation Paves Way for Smart and Sustainable Logistics

As part of the visit to Vietnam by the Dutch Economic Mission led by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Aukje de Vries (from November 9-13), 27 leading Dutch enterprises attended the seminar to promote economic cooperation, particularly in logistics and infrastructure development. The event also gathered representatives from government agencies, businesses, and research institutes of both Vietnam and the Netherlands.

Developing Green and Smart Seaports

Speaking at the seminar, Minister Aukje de Vries highly appreciated Vietnam’s progress in the field of seaport development. She noted that Vietnam is currently building and modernizing numerous ports to meet the growing demand, with a strong focus on “greening” the port system and promoting inland waterway transport in both the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta regions.

According to the Minister, Vietnam is pursuing a balanced and intelligent approach, expanding in scale while simultaneously investing in quality, digitalization, and sustainability. These are key factors that make the logistics system more resilient and better prepared for future development.

She emphasized that, to further advance in this sector, Vietnam needs concrete planning, effective design, sustainable materials, a skilled workforce, and long-term, transparent partnerships. She cited the Port of Rotterdam as a testament to the Netherlands’ global expertise in logistics management and affirmed the Netherlands’ readiness to share its knowledge and technology to support Vietnam in developing a modern port system.

During the seminar, Vietnamese and Dutch delegates discussed various solutions to enhance cooperation in the maritime sector. They stressed the importance of accelerating digital transformation and adopting clean energy in port operations toward building smart, green, and carbon-neutral ports.

Dutch representatives shared experiences in the planning and operation of the Port of Rotterdam, including vessel traffic management systems (VTS), automatic identification systems (AIS), and the development of multimodal logistics. These measures have helped improve management efficiency and minimize environmental impacts.

In addition, participants proposed establishing dedicated maritime routes connecting Vietnam’s deep-water ports such as Cai Mep-Thi Vai and Lach Huyen with Dutch ports. Experts also encouraged Dutch enterprises to invest in the development of inland container depots (ICDs) and logistics centers in key localities such as Hai Phong, Ba Ria–Vung Tau, Can Tho, and Da Nang.

Furthermore, cooperation in maritime training and human resource development was underscored, with a focus on strengthening partnerships between Vietnamese maritime training institutions and Dutch universities and research institutes in the areas of management, operations, and green logistics.

Promoting Sustainable Aviation Development

According to reports presented during the session on aviation cooperation, the Vietnam–Netherlands Comprehensive Partnership, established in 2019, stands as a testament to both countries’ commitment to sustainable development, particularly in the transport sector. Building on the achievements of their cooperation from 2016 to 2019, the two sides agreed to expand collaboration into new areas such as airport operations management, multimodal transport connectivity to reduce logistics costs, environmental protection, and aviation human resource development.

Delegates emphasized that promoting joint research and planning of smart airports, along with the application of artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and digital technologies in air traffic management and operations, plays a crucial role in enhancing efficiency and sustainability.

Experts from both countries also highlighted the importance of strengthening aviation logistics cooperation, particularly in cold chain logistics, international cargo transport, and the development of logistics hubs in Long Thanh, Noi Bai, and Chu Lai - areas where many Dutch enterprises are exploring potential investment opportunities.

In addition, participants proposed establishing an annual Vietnam-Netherlands Aviation Dialogue Forum to exchange policies and green standards, while promoting public–private partnership (PPP) investment projects in airport development.

Dutch experts further suggested organizing study visits, surveys, and experience-sharing activities in aviation safety and sustainable development, as well as sharing expertise in applying advanced technologies in the aviation supply chain. These include the Airport Collaborative Decision-Making (A-CDM) system and digital identification systems (VNeID), which contribute to optimizing operations and improving the passenger experience.
