| "This is baseless information," Foreign Affairs Ministry deputy spokesman Ngo Toan Thang said Thursday. |
He was responding to inquiries regarding U.S.-based cybersecurity firm FireEye alleging the Vietnamese government has been supporting the hacking group known as APT32 to break into Chinese state organizations at the centre of Beijing’s effort to contain the coronavirus outbreak.
FireEye said that APT32 had tried to compromise the personal and professional email accounts of staff at China’s Ministry of Emergency Management and the government of Wuhan, the Chinese city at the centre of the global coronavirus pandemic, Reuter reported on Wednesday.
“This is baseless information. Vietnam strictly prohibits acts of cyberattacks targeting organizations and individuals in any form. Cyberattacks and threats to online security must be condemned and strictly punished accordance with the law”, Thang said.
According to the deputy spokesperson, the Vietnam National Assembly has passed the Cyber Security law since 2018 and is currently finalizing legal documents to enforce the law.
“Vietnam is willing to cooperate with the international community in combating and preventing cyber-attacks in any form”, he said.
