According to the Import-Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, global coffee prices rose sharply in mid-June as several supply-side challenges emerged simultaneously.

In Brazil, heavy rainfall during the harvest season delayed coffee collection in many key producing regions. Meanwhile, the El Niño phenomenon has heightened the risk of drought in Robusta-producing areas across Southeast Asia, particularly in Vietnam and Indonesia. Low Arabica and Robusta inventories on international commodity exchanges have also exerted upward pressure on coffee prices.

Domestically, Robusta coffee prices have followed the upward trend in the global market. According to Cao Thi Luu Bieu, a coffee grower in Ea Kao Ward, Dak Lak Province, domestic coffee prices have increased compared to the previous month, reaching approximately VND 93,000 per kilogram. Many farmers are holding back their stocks in anticipation of further price increases, suggesting that domestic prices may continue to fluctuate in the coming months.

These developments are expected to support Vietnam's coffee exports during the remainder of the year. Statistics show that from the beginning of the year to June 15, Vietnam exported more than 985,000 tonnes of coffee worth nearly USD 4.5 billion, up 11.8% in volume but down 10.7% in value compared to the same period in 2025. However, many businesses believe that if higher prices are driven solely by short-term supply-demand fluctuations and weather conditions, the price advantage will not be sustainable.

To achieve long-term export growth, Vietnam's coffee industry must continue enhancing its competitiveness through improved quality. This has become increasingly important as major importing markets introduce new regulatory requirements. Specifically, the European Union (EU) is continuing to finalize and implement its Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Instant coffee has been proposed for inclusion within the scope of the regulation to ensure consistency across coffee product categories.

This is particularly significant given that processed coffee currently accounts for 17.9% of Vietnam's coffee export structure and has shown steady annual growth.

Other major export markets, including the United States and Japan, are also increasing coffee imports while placing greater emphasis on premium-quality coffee, organic coffee, processed coffee, as well as sustainability standards and product traceability.
