State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on July 22 sent a greeting letter to Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide on the occasion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics – a big sport event that is widely anticipated and followed in Vietnam and globally, reported VNA.

In his letter to Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide, President Phuc congratulated Japan on its organizing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, which he says is an anticipated sporting event globally and in Vietnam as well.

He shared difficulties and obstacles, especially the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the government and people of Japan have met and overcome to let the global summer games take place on schedule.

“I understand that for the solemn opening ceremony to take place on July 23, 2021, the Prime Minister and the people of Japan had to overcome many obstacles and difficulties, especially the unprecedented huge impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,” President Phuc wrote in his letter.

Wishing the summer games a great success, President Phuc noted the burning torch of the game will constitute a source of great encouragement to global sport lovers about the bravery and strength of people in the face of the pandemic, and at the same time symbolize the will and resilient spirit of Japan - a strong nation that develops prosperously in the world and is an extensive strategic partner of Vietnam.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics debuted on July 23, attracting the participation of 11,000 athletes from 206 countries and territories worldwide.

Vietnam has sent 18 athletes to compete in 11 sports, namely shooting, weightlifting, badminton, swimming, boxing, gymnastics, Taekwondo, archery, track-and-field, rowing and Judo, according to VOV.

The Vietnamese leader once again expressed his wish that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics will be a great success.

The burning Olympics torch in Tokyo will be a great encouragement to sport lovers about the bravery and strength of humans when facing the pandemic, and also a noble symbol of the resilient will and spirit of Japan - a strong nation, a prosperous developed country of the world and an extensive strategic partner of Vietnam, he added.
