On July 27, the Three Gorges Dam in Hubei Province continued to open its floodgates. The third flood in 2020 is striking the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, sending water to the Three Gorges Dam’s reservoirs at a rate of 50,000 cubic meters per second.

In a statement released on July 26, the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China warned that the worst flood in the Yangtze River is yet to come, and millions of people might continue to be evacuated.

With the torrential rains and flooding are still ravaging, Chinese authorities had ordered to keep discharging floodwater, preparing for a new wave of flooding coming.

“The flood control situation is currently very crucial. The flood peaks could appear in the coming time”, E Jingping, the Minister of Water Resources said.

Jingping said efforts must be taken to increase floodwater discharge on the Hoai River, reduce the water level in Hong Trach lake and prepare to evacuate nearby residents if necessary. Hoai is among the four longest rivers in China, and also is the tributary of Yangtze river.

Jingping also warned of the landslides possibility in northern China, including Inner Mongolia and Hebei area. The Minister is also calling on local governments to take preventive measures against heavy rains in the region.

China’s National Meteorological Agency has forecast heavy rain will go on in the next three days in southern provinces of China such as Chongqing, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui and Jiangsu.

Central and southern China have been severely affected by the worst floods since 1998. Floods have forced 46 million people to evacuate in 27 of the country's 31 provinces since the heavy rain began in June. At least 141 people were killed or went missing. Economic losses have amounted to 116 billion yuan (US $ 17 billion), according to the Emergency Department.

The Three Gorges reservoir in the coming days is expected to receive a water flow running at 60,000 cubic meters per second. The current water level recorded in the lake on July 27 was 159.46 m, lower than the level of 164.18 m a week ago. The lake is designed with a maximum water level of 175 m.
