Algeria’s Minister of Health, Population and Hospital Reform Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene affirmed that the country had the capacity to become a regional center for healthcare workforce training and medical logistics, as well as being ready to receive initiatives and cooperation programs facilitating African countries. Algeria expects the experience of the National School of Management and Administration of Health (ENMAS) to contribute to improving the quality of healthcare professional training across the region.
Besides, Algeria is finalizing essential regulations to obtain WHO Maturity Level 3 (ML-3) certification for its medicines and vaccine production management system. The WHO plans to conduct the final assessment from next September and this certificate is expected to elevate Algeria’s pharmaceutical industry capacity, promoting medicine exports to African markets.
At the same time, Algeria also supports its partners in building pharmaceutical management systems, training workforce, and improving domestic manufacturing capabilities. To take advantage of Algeria’s experience in pharmaceutical management, production and distribution, such African countries as Kenya, Niger, Senegal, Mauritania, Chad and Libya strengthened in approaching Algeria to boost cooperation and enhance regional pharmaceutical autonomy capability.
While most of the African countries remain dependent on imported medicines, Algeria currently meets around 83% of its domestic pharmaceutical demand thanks to local production. The country now has nearly 250 pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, accounting for more than one-third of Africa’s total pharmaceutical production facilities. This manufacturing capacity has made Algeria one of the biggest continental pharmaceutical centers in the context of many countries seeking to reduce reliance on external suppliers.
Algeria is not only focusing on producing generic medicines but also expanding investment in high-tech industries, including biopharmaceuticals, cancer drugs, biosimilars, and insulin. There are currently 15 Algerian domestic facilities licensed to manufacture cancer drugs, with many other facilities specializing in monoclonal antibodies and other advanced therapies. Algeria also accelerates the development of its vaccine industry by producing seasonal influenza vaccines domestically and constructing a new vaccine manufacturing plant in Annaba.
Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed that health security in Africa is ensured through sustainable investment in the healthcare system, stronger surveillance capacity and research support. According to the President, building a safer Africa in healthcare must be started by investing sustainably in the healthcare system, enhancing surveillance and early-warning capabilities, developing a skilled workforce, and supporting scientific research alongside domestically producing medical equipment and vaccines. He also affirmed Algeria’s commitment to sharing its expertise and experience with African countries to benefit the well-being of people across the continent.
