The Chairman of the Can Tho Municipal People's Committee expressed deep appreciation for the support from the Australian Embassy and Consulate General in connecting local officials to public governance training programs under the Mekong - Australia Partnership, as well as in implementing practical projects in education, agriculture and climate change adaptation.

Regarding a major milestone in the locality’s development, the city leader noted that from July 2025, the new Can Tho City was officially established through the merger with Soc Trang and Hau Giang provinces. The new administrative unit covers a natural area of about 6,360 square kilometers and has a population of more than 3.2 million people. Based on its expanded scale and new position, Truong Canh Tuyen expressed hope that Ambassador Gillian Bird would serve as an important bridge to promote Australian investment flows into key sectors such as the economy, high-tech agriculture, agricultural and seafood preservation and processing technologies, climate change response, education and training, specialized healthcare, carbon credit projects and sustainable livelihood models for local communities.

“The city is committed to accompanying investors and creating an open and transparent investment environment to welcome Australian businesses to explore and expand cooperation,” Truong Canh Tuyen emphasized.

Highly appreciating the strategic importance of the Mekong Delta, Ambassador Gillian Bird recalled the effective support provided by the Australian Government, which has invested more than 650 million AUD in the region since 2000. Landmark projects such as My Thuan Bridge and Cao Lanh Bridge have become important connectors for the region’s development.

In Can Tho specifically, the Ambassador said Australia is prioritizing programs aimed at improving agricultural productivity and strengthening resilience to environmental challenges. In the field of education, Australia also hopes to promote public–private partnership (PPP) models involving the government, research institutions and businesses to help develop a highly skilled workforce.

Gillian Bird also revealed that the Australian Business Association is actively working with the Consulate General to organize field survey missions to Can Tho. This is a concrete step toward realizing Australia’s priorities in trade and investment cooperation.
