Two European heavyweights go head to head as France and Germany face off in their first game of Euro 2020.

The term ‘Group of Death’ is certainly overused, but entirely applicable this summer as France, Germany and Portugal were all drawn together (along with Hungary) in Group F.

A star-studded France are out to add to their 2018 World Cup triumph by adding the Euros crown, with Didier Deschamps boasting the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba in a squad brimming with talent.

As for Germany, they are in between cycles, but Joachim Low - who will step down as Nationalmannschaft coach at the end of the tournament - still has quality all over the park.

France vs Germany: Match preview

Twenty-one years on from masterminding France's triumph at Euro 2000 on the field, Deschamps will now endeavour to add a continental manager's medal to his ever-impressive haul of success, and the memories of their glorious World Cup summer three years ago still live fresh in the minds of the early favourites.

France may have suffered an unforeseen defeat to Turkey during qualification for Euro 2020, but their place in the finals was never up for debate, and it is only fitting to see France take their spot in the group of death alongside Germany, Hungary and reigning European champions Portugal, according to Sportmole.

Fielding near full-strength outfits in friendlies with Wales and Bulgaria certainly sent a message to the rest of the continent that France are in no position to mess around this summer, and Deschamps witnessed his fear-inducing crop ease to 3-0 successes in both games ahead of Euro 2020.

Not since the inaugural tournament in 1960 have Les Bleus suffered defeat during their opening game - losing a thrilling encounter 5-4 to Yugoslavia 61 years ago - and with Deschamps's rearguard boasting four clean sheets in their last four games, Germany's potent attackers have their work cut out for them.

Germany also boast a 12-game unbeaten record during their opening games of the Euros, but it was France who ended their dreams of glory five years ago, as a brace from Griezmann saw Les Bleus dump their rivals out in the semi-finals, and Die Mannschaft are winless in their last five encounters with the reigning world champions.

France vs Germany: Prediction

Germany's talented strike force will make it difficult for France to register a clean sheet, although Joechim Loew's men are no longer the force they once were.

Les Blues, despite being the 'away' side here, are the favorites in the tie and expect the likes of Mbappe and Griezmann to make a difference.

Given how tight Group F could end up being, starting with a win is vital. Germany looked confident in their 7-1 warm-up win vs Latvia, but France are a different proposition altogether. Les Bleus have so much talent and belief that they should get off to a win, but it could be a real thriller.

Prediction: France 2-1 Germany

France vs Germany: Betting tips

Draw

While France haven't lost any of their last five matches against Germany, it is important to remember that this game will be played in Munich and Germany have held France to draws in the last two matches played on German soil. France are the form favourites though with five wins and one draw from their last six matches, compared to Germany's three wins, two defeats and one draw. However, we expect Germany to use the home advantage to nullify France's attackers with a strong defensive display, according to Footballwhispers.

Under 2.5 Goals

Four of the last six meetings between these two countries have produced under 2.5 goals and we're expecting another tight and tense affair in the pair's opening game of the group stage. Germany held France to a goalless draw when the two teams last locked horns in Munich and three of France's last five matches have witnessed fewer than three goals being scored.

0-0 Draw

France have kept clean sheets in each of their last four fixtures and when these two sides last went head-to-head in Munich, that game ended in a goalless draw. We have only seen both teams score in one of the last six encounters between these two nations and we're expecting that pattern to continue on Tuesday, for what we believe will be a very close encounter.
