According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are in the forecast for isolated pockets of Haryana on January 24, over Rajasthan between January 24-27, and across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on January 26 and 27.

For the plain areas, the IMD declares a cold wave when the minimum temperatures are 10°C or below, and fall at least 4.5°C below the region’s normal mercury levels for two consecutive days. But for small areas like Delhi, a cold wave can also be declared if the temperature criteria is fulfilled even for a single day.

Meanwhile, the prediction also adds that cold day to severe cold day conditions are expected in some pockets of Uttar Pradesh for the next 2-3 days.

A cold day is declared when the minimum temperature is below 10°C and the maximum temperature is 4.4°C below the regional normal.

In view of these forecasted conditions, the IMD’s regional met centre in New Delhi has issued orange alerts over Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, January 24; and across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Sunday and Monday, Jan 24-25. An orange alert urges residents to ‘be prepared’ for rough conditions.

These respective orange alerts over the aforementioned states will subsequently be replaced by yellow-level watches, which advise people to ‘be aware’ of their local weather situation, for the following 2-3 days. As for Rajasthan, the desert state will retain its yellow watch from January 24-27 without any changes.

Along with the cold, dense to very dense fog is also likely to engulf some pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan over the next 4-5 days, along with Bihar and north Madhya Pradesh for the next 2-3 days.

Meanwhile, the weather across the Western Himalayan region will continue to be affected by the western disturbance that, as of Saturday afternoon, lies over North Pakistan and neighbourhood. The system will produce isolated rain/snow over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, January 24, and fade off entirely by the start of next week.

5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over east Afghanistan and neighbourhood, with a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies and an induced cyclonic circulation in lower levels over central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab.

Under its influence, fairly widespread to widespread rain/snow is likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh, and isolated rain/snow is expected over Uttarakhand on Saturday, January 23.

Meanwhile, Saturday will also see an anticyclonic circulation centred on the Deccan Plateau will become dominant, and create calm wind conditions in the surrounding area. In the east coast, fog formation is favourable.

Nighttime temperature will be in single digits over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, eastern Rajasthan and much of Madhya Pradesh at the beginning of February.
