According to Skymet Weather, the present Western Disturbance has moved eastwards in Jammu and Kashmir. However, a new western disturbance is coming towards North India. The effect of this system will be visible from 8 January. Although this would be a weak system.

A cyclonic circulation is over southern Haryana and adjoining areas in the plains. A cyclonic circulation has developed over the south-central Arabian Sea. A trough is extending from this system up to North Madhya Maharashtra.

Another trough is running from Comorin region to southern coastal Andhra Pradesh through Tamil Nadu. During the next 24 hours, light rain and snowfall activities may continue over the Western Himalayas.

Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected to continue over Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Heavy rainfall is also expected in some places.

Light to moderate rains with one or two heavy spells may occur over Madhya Maharashtra, South Konkan and Goa, and Marathwada. Light to moderate showers may occur at some places in Vidarbha, Rayalaseema and Telangana.

Parts of Northwest and Central India will see some drop in minimum temperatures. Light rains are likely on January 8 in parts of Haryana, Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, western Madhya Pradesh and northern Rajasthan.

Scientists said from Saturday, the wind speed is likely to pick up significantly, which will improve the air quality.

“There is a possibility of light rain in some parts of Delhi on January 9, after which the wind speed is likely to reach around 25kmph. The AQI will improve over the weekend,” said VK Soni, head of IMD’s environment monitoring and research centre.

Union ministry of earth science’s air quality monitoring centre, System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (Safar), also said the ventilation condition is expected to improve marginally in the next two days.

“The AQI is likely to marginally improve and be in the “poor” or ”moderate” range on January 9 and January 10,” the Safar forecast read.

Winter showers were reported across Mumbai and neighbouring areas late Thursday evening and early Friday morning. Cloudy weather and light rainfall are likely to continue till Saturday, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Isolated winter showers were reported in Kurla, Mahalaxmi, Borivali, Kandivali and Bandra. Neighbouring areas such as Thane, Dombivali and Badlapur also saw isolated spells of rain on Thursday evening and Friday morning. IMD attributed the unseasonal rain to a trough along the coast of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

“Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies and rainfall in some parts. Under the influence of a trough in low level easterlies from Karnataka coast to Maharashtra coast in lower tropospheric levels, isolated to scattered rainfall with moderate thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places is very likely over Maharashtra during the next two days,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general of western region, IMD.

According to Hindustan Times, due to a cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea and another cyclonic circulation over south Tamil Nadu coast, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and moderate thunderstorm and lightning is likely over the southern peninsular India during the next 2-3 days.

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely over Kerala, Mahe and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next 24 hours.

Under the influence of a trough (area of low pressure) in low level easterlies from Karnataka coast to Maharashtra coast in lower tropospheric levels; isolated to scattered rainfall with moderate thunderstorm and lightning is very likely over Maharashtra during the next 2 days.

Over northwest India, the minimum temperatures are likely to fall by 3 to 4 degree Celsius over most parts during the next 4-5 days. Cold wave conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on January 8 and 9.

Due to abundant moisture available and other favourable meteorological features, dense to very dense fog is likely over parts of Punjab and Haryana and dense fog over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh is likely today.
