A casting session was held in Hanoi on August 26, drawing the participation of more than 200 pageant hopefuls.
Most of the contestants are from northern region, though some have come from as far as the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre and Vietnamese expatriates in Singapore have even flown to Vietnam to compete in the casting session.
The contestant from Ben Tre Province said she was so eager to take part in the project she flew to Hanoi for the casting session rather than waiting until September 22 to attend the session in Ho Chi Minh City.
After winnowing the entrants down to 40 contestants, the judges select the best 20 to take part in global beauty contests throughout 2018 and 2019.
According to pageant trainer Phuc Nguyen, the judges paid attention to new outstanding faces to prepare them for continued success at beauty contests around the world.
The casting session lasts for more than 9 hours, with the judges working hard to select the best 20 candidates.
One of the judges, Miss Earth 2015 Angelia Ong, chooses her top 3 candidates, Miss Jewellery 2017 Nguyen Thi My Duyen, second runner-up of Miss Sea Vietnam Global 2018 Nguyen Phuong Khanh, and top 10 finalist of Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 Le Thu Trang.
Angelia Ong considers Nguyen Phuong Khanh to have the greatest potential as she has a good command of foreign languages.
The judges also select 5 Vietnamese representatives to perform at the New York couture fashion week, including Tran Manh Kien, Duong Nguyen Kha Trang, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Huyen, Dang Vu Dieu Huyen and Nguyen Thi My Duyen.
Duong Nguyen Kha Trang is selected to represent Vietnam at Supermodel International in Thailand on September 3.
