Lumitel opens nation's first ever 4G services in Burundi
Viettel Burundi, backed by Vietnam Military-run Telecommunications Group Viettel and offering services under the brand name Lumitel, has launched the country’s first ever 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.
The network offers a range of mobile Internet services with speeds of up to 100Mbps covering the core parts of the following provinces: Bujumbura, Gitega, Ngozi, Rumonge Makamba and Muyinga.
Users wishing to take advantage of Lumitel’s LTE offer will need to buy a 4G-enabled Samsung, LG, iPhone or L9501 smartphone from Lumitel, which it says are available at an “affordable price”.
In January 2014, Viettel Global announced the establishment of a new cellular unit, Viettel Burundi, which was created after Viettel added another VND6.2 trillion (USD291.1 million) to finance capital for new projects.
Officially opening business in April 2015, legally registered as Viettel Burundi SA, the company is headquartered in Bujumbura.
Having over one million subscribers, Lumitel aims to become the largest telecom operator in Burundi, with 1,000 base stations covering 95% of the population. In addition, the newcomer seeks to deploy 5,000km of fibre-optic infrastructure, ahead of its planned entry into the country’s fixed line telecoms sector.
It is also a pioneer in providing innovative calling, data and SMS packages for customers, especially Social package for Facebook, unlimited WhatsApp package and student package.
The Vietnam Military-run Telecommunications Group, although has not provided 4G network in Vietnam, already offers it in Laos and Cambodia via Unitel and Metfone in 2015.
This year, it plans to active this service to other international markets such as Timor, Peru, and Haiti./.
