The construction of the 38.8 metre-tall flag pole was commenced on April 20, 2016, with a total investment of VND 3.56 billion (US$ 156,600) mobilised by the Quang Tri provincial People’s Committee from non-State resources.
It was built to promote the historical tradition of Con Co as an outpost island, establish a symbol for independence, freedom, and peace, while reaffirming the sacred national sovereignty over the island.
At the inauguration ceremony, Chairman of Quang Tri provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chinh announced the launch of a new tour to Con Co island district.
Located 13-17 nautical miles east from the mainland of Quang Tri province, Con Co island has an area of 2.3 square kilometres with a population of approximately 400 people.
Since the Government approved the launch of a tour to the district, the local authorities have undertaken measures to upgrade its facilities, restore historical sites and encourage islanders to create typical tourist products.
According to Chairman Nguyen Duc Chinh, the inauguration of the tour will help to boost Con Co as the top of a tourist triangle connecting the three destinations of Cua Tung, Cua Viet and Con Co in the province, thus contributing to the socio-economic development in the locality./.
