Naval Squadron 129 Raises IUU Awareness for Da Nang fishermen

Naval Squadron 129 of the Navy, in coordination with the Sea and Fisheries Sub-Department of Da Nang city, conducted outreach for fishermen on preventing illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing; introduced the operations of fishing harbors and fishing villages in the Truong Sa special zone (Khanh Hoa province); and promoted the program “The Viet Nam Navy as a support for fishermen to go offshore and stay at sea” from December 18 to 20.

Participants in the outreach included Lieutenant Colonel Le Xuan Tam, Deputy Political Commissar of the Squadron; Nguyen Huu Truong, Head of the Fisheries Surveillance Division under the Sea and Fisheries Sub-Department of Da Nang; and representatives of local authorities.

Under the coordinated program, the Squadron conducted communication activities for nearly 500 vessel owners, captains, and fishermen in Quang Phu ward and Tam Hai commune. These localities have the largest number of offshore fishing vessels in Da Nang and regularly operate in traditional fishing grounds.

The outreach content focused on Prime Minister’s Directive 45/CT-TTg dated December 13, 2017 on “Urgent tasks and solutions to address the European Commission’s warning on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU)”; the tasks and operational results of fishing harbors and fishing villages in the Truong Sa special zone; and an introduction to activities under the program “The Vietnam Navy as a support for fishermen to go offshore and stay at sea”.

On this occasion, the Squadron presented 500 national flags, 500 personal life jackets, and 1,500 information leaflets to local fishermen.
