UNESCO and the Government of Japan Strengthen Disaster Prevention Capacity and School Safety in Vietnam

The 48th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) opened on July 19 in Busan, the Republic of Korea, with the participation of around 3,000 delegates from member states, observer organizations, non-governmental organizations, and academia to discuss issues related to the conservation of cultural and natural heritage.

According to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Seoul, UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany, speaking at the opening ceremony, emphasized that World Heritage is not only a legacy of the past but also a source of inspiration for the present and the future. He called on countries to strengthen solidarity and cooperation in responding to common challenges and safeguarding humanity's shared values.

President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung said that World Heritage transcends national borders and generations, serving as a symbol of the common values of humanity while laying the foundation for peace and international cooperation.

He noted that, at a time when the world continues to face conflicts and divisions, dialogue through culture is of particular importance in strengthening mutual understanding among peoples.

The President reaffirmed that the Republic of Korea will continue to work closely with UNESCO in heritage conservation, contributing to the building of a more peaceful and prosperous future.

He also noted that the Republic of Korea's hosting of the session coincides with the 150th anniversary of the birth of independence leader Kim Gu, giving the event special significance. President Lee also recalled Kim Gu's vision of building a nation that contributes to humanity through the power of culture, describing it as consistent with the spirit of the UNESCO Constitution.

The session running through July 29 will review 30 new nominations for inscription on the World Heritage List, three proposed modifications to properties already inscribed, and assess the state of conservation of 147 existing World Heritage properties. Delegates will also discuss issues related to heritage conservation, heritage management, and the implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

To date, UNESCO has inscribed 1,248 World Heritage properties, comprising 972 cultural properties, 235 natural properties, and 41 mixed properties. This year's session is expected to promote international cooperation in heritage conservation while further enhancing the role of culture as a bridge for dialogue, peace, and sustainable development.
