When you want to give your skin some TLC, but can't bring yourself to leave the vicinity of your humble abode, try these homemade mask recipes for glowing skin that come courtesy of food and skincare experts.

Benefits of face masks for your skin

Facial masks are one of the easiest ways to get healthy and supple skin within a few minutes. They are designed for different skin and age types, it has a variety of choices and beauty feature.

Usually, a facial mask product is to be used for a short period of time on the face. It takes only a few seconds to apply, and then you just have to wait for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off, some you can sleep in.

Applying a face mask also helps you to relax. You get the time to relax, while your face mask is working. This will help you to de-stress and that alone can make you look and feel better! Whether you use a cream or a sheet mask, you’ll feel great during the process.

It is simple and easy to apply a face mask and it gives you immense benefits. It is highly recommended to include it in your skincare routine.

1. Refines skin poles

Clearer skin and more refined pores. Deep cleanses the pores and clears the pores of dead skin cells, metabolic wastes, and the oily substances that can clog them.

When the skin is hydrated and well moisturized, it becomes easy to apply proper makeup. Also, it gives a more plump and youthful appearance to the skin.

3. Diminishes fine lines

Regular use can reduce the signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and so on. Also, you will get to enjoy a softer and smoother skin texture.

Helps to diminish hyper-pigmentation and give you more even skin tone and texture. It also promotes sweat gland secretion so as to increase the oxygen content of the skin.

A flaky forehead is not a good look, but if your current moisturizer isn't doing much to quench your dry skin, look no further than this homemade hydrating face mask.

What you need:

  • 1/2 Avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • A handful of oats or oat bran

How it works:

Yes, it sounds like an Instagram-worthy breakfast but refrains from scoffing the ingredients for a second, because they'll work much better all over your face.

According to Clean Beauty co-founder Dominika Minarovic, honey is an excellent humectant, which means it helps skin retain moisture without feeling oily - but that's not all. 'It's a wonder ingredient,' says Dominika. 'Massaged on to affected areas, it helps with the appearance of scars and increases both healing and tissue regeneration.'

And if you want to step up your face mask game? Mix it with oats - an ingredient even beauty brands like Aveeno and Garnier pack into their moisturizers.

And thanks to the ultra-nourishing oils, the addition of mashed avocado will banish any roughness, leaving your skin silky smooth. If you don't have any at home, substitute for 3 tablespoons of milk.

'Adding milk, which contains lactic acid, will gently exfoliate the skin whilst brightening without irritation,' explains Lorraine Scrivener, skin expert, and director at Eden Skin Clinic.

Leaving it on for 15 minutes is ample.

6. For dry skin: honey & avocado mask

For a hefty dose of moisture, honey and avocado is a simple yet powerful combo, according to Tsippora Shainhouse, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Santa Monica, California.

Honey hydrates by drawing water to the surface of the skin contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits and has a low risk of irritation.

Avocado contains natural oils that quickly soften and moisturize the skin, adds Dr. Shainhouse. Other natural oils that are safe and hydrating include olive, jojoba, argan, sunflower, and grapeseed oil. All are good choices for at-home masks, says Dr. Shainhouse.

Make the mask: Mash 1/4 of a whole avocado with 1 teaspoon each of honey and olive oil (or other natural oil you have on hand). Spread evenly over your face and leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

7. For dull skin: exfoliating oat-honey-banana mask

In addition to being soothing, oats are a natural exfoliant. That means they help slough away the dead layer of skin cells that can give skin a dull appearance, says Whitney Bowe, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin. Beyond their sweet aroma, bananas thicken the mask, act as a natural moisturizer, and pack a bit of skin-brightening vitamin C.

For those with oily or acne-prone skin, she suggests adding full-fat yogurt to the mix—a teaspoon should do the trick. Yogurt contains lactic acid, an AHA that will boost the exfoliating properties of the oatmeal.

Got finicky skin? Don’t fret. This simple mask is gentle enough if you’re sensitive, says Dr. Bowe.

Make the mask: Mash together 2 tablespoons of raw oats, 1 teaspoon of honey, and half a banana. If desired, add 1 teaspoon of full-fat yogurt. Rub the mask in a circular motion on damp skin for a few minutes. Rinse off with warm water, pat your skin dry, and moisturize.

8. DIY Face Mask Recipe To... Protect Against Pollution

We're only just beginning to understand the damaging effects that environmental aggressors like pollution (especially particulate matter and CO2) have on our skin, but that's where this savvy concoction from the girls at Clean Beauty comes in.

What you need:

  • A handful of ground almonds
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil

How it works:

It might not sound like much, but the fatty acid content from the almonds is able to penetrate the skin, leaving it soft and supple, while the vitamin E from the olive oil acts like a coat of armor against free radicals which can lead to dullness, dehydration and fine lines.

And if you really want to amp up the protection? Add a teaspoon of matcha powder. High in antioxidants (which are essential vitamins that deflect the bad stuff), it'll neutralize pesky free radicals and, in turn, help prevent the breakdown of collagen.

Leave it on for 10 minutes, but before rinsing it off, gently massage the paste into your skin to really dislodge everyday grime, make-up, dead cells, and oil.
