According to Vietnam's Permanent Mission to Geneva, this decisive step brings the total number of ratifications to 111 - the minimum required for the agreement to officially enter into force worldwide. Vietnam is proud to be among the four countries, alongside Brazil, Kenya, and Tonga, that have helped “activate” this landmark accord.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to Geneva, formally handed over the instrument of ratification on behalf of the State. The event not only enhances Vietnam’s reputation and standing as a reliable, responsible partner in the international community, but also underscores its strong commitment to the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing - a key concern for the country’s seafood export markets.
WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala emphasized in her remarks: “This is powerful proof of what multilateralism can achieve when we come together for a common purpose.” The Agreement not only safeguards marine ecosystems but also supports the livelihoods of over 260 million people who depend on marine fisheries, while encouraging countries to reallocate resources toward sustainable fisheries management. It marks a positive signal for global trade, demonstrating that trade can be part of the solution to environmental and geopolitical challenges.
For Vietnam, the ratification of the Agreement reaffirms its steadfast commitment to a rules-based, fair, and sustainable international trading system, while also delivering tangible benefits at home. The Agreement will serve as a key driver for restructuring the fisheries sector toward modernization, sustainability, and science-based practices.
By bringing the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement to life, Vietnam is not only fulfilling its commitments but also actively shaping a future where trade and sustainability go hand in hand - for a blue ocean, the shared heritage of all humanity.
