Celebrating the Vietnam–China bond through year of cultural exchange

What is the significance of the Vietnam–China Year of People-to-People Exchanges for bilateral relations?

During General Secretary To Lam’s State visit to China in August 2024, the top leaders of both Parties and countries agreed to designate 2025 as the “Vietnam–China Year of People-to-People Exchanges,” marking 75 years of diplomatic relations. This reflects a shared strategic understanding reached at a time when bilateral ties, following their elevation to a “Community of Shared Future of Strategic Significance” (December 2023), are undergoing strong and comprehensive development guided by the “six more” principles.

The initiative carries several important meanings:

First, it provides an opportunity to look back on the historic journey of friendship and pay tribute to generations of leaders—especially President Ho Chi Minh and Chairman Mao Zedong—who laid the foundation for today’s enduring relationship, famously characterized as “both comrades and brothers.”

Second, the exchange year serves as a driver to boost cooperation in culture, education, and tourism, and to deepen mutual understanding between the peoples of both countries. It will help younger generations inherit and carry forward the shared legacy of friendship—a valuable asset of both nations.

Third, it acts as a catalyst to promote broader engagement across Party channels, government agencies, localities, and social organizations. This cooperation will help translate high-level agreements and joint statements into tangible outcomes that contribute to the prosperity of both countries in a new era.

Finally, by fostering mutual trust and a positive social foundation, the initiative will help manage differences and support peaceful, stable, and forward-looking bilateral relations—contributing to regional and global stability.

Boosting Vietnam–China cooperation in science and technology

How important is science and technology cooperation between Vietnam and China, particularly as Vietnam enters a new era of development?

Over the past 45 years of reform and opening-up, China has made remarkable strides in science and technology—transforming from a latecomer into a global powerhouse. It now ranks third in the world in R&D investment and leads in the number of patent filings. Recent breakthroughs in AI, 5G, robotics, semiconductors, and space technology continue to impress the world. China has achieved in four decades what took many countries centuries.

For Vietnam, science, technology, and innovation are seen as decisive drivers of sustainable development. This is underscored in key policy documents, most recently in Resolution 57 of the Politburo (December 22, 2024), which identifies science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as top breakthroughs to modernize production, improve governance, and ensure rapid, sustainable economic growth.

To achieve its development goals, Vietnam aims to leverage its growing, skilled workforce, improving investment policies, and potential as an R&D destination to deepen international cooperation in science, innovation, and digital transformation. Vietnam seeks to play a greater role in global high-tech production and supply chains.

China’s success offers strong inspiration and valuable opportunities for developing countries like Vietnam. The potential for Vietnam–China science and technology cooperation is immense. Vietnam looks forward to deeper partnership, especially in training high-quality human resources, technology transfer, and financial support—laying a strong foundation as both nations enter a new era of prosperity.
