Vietnam confirms eight new imported COVID-19 cases

Vietnam confirmed eight new imported COVID-19 cases, all Vietnamese citizens, from 6 am to 6 pm on April 28, according to the Health Ministry. They were put under quarantine right upon their arrivals, including one in Nam Dinh, one in Da Nang, and six in Khanh Hoa. No new case has been reported on the morning of April 29.

The steering committee for COVID-19 vaccination safety debuts

A steering committee for COVID-19 vaccination safety debuted at a video conference in Hanoi on April 28 that was connected to 63 cities and provinces nationwide. The committee is headed by Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Truong Son, Deputy Minister of Health.

Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long issued Decision No 1888/QĐ-BYT on April 15 establishing the steering committee, which comprises senior officials from the ministry and leaders from its departments along with leading local experts and scientists in diverse fields, from immunization, infection, emergency resuscitation, and intensive care to hematology, cardiology, and neurology.

The committee is tasked with guiding medical establishments on screening, monitoring, and handling any adverse events following COVID-19 vaccinations and promptly assisting localities in dealing with all situations safely. Committee members work online and stand ready to reply to any concerns regarding the vaccination of health workers, the official said.

No incidents of rare blood clots have been reported so far, while typical reactions (tiredness, mild fever, muscle pains, etc.) were reported in about 30 percent of people - even lower than the advisory information from the manufacturer and reports from European authorities.

HCM City asked to support southwestern provinces in COVID-19 fight

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh has asked Ho Chi Minh City to maintain a high level of vigilance against COVID-19, improve its quarantine capacity, and be ready to support other localities, including the southwestern border provinces. At a working session with HCM City’s leaders on April 28, Binh said the city should review its COVID-19 prevention and control from the highest to the grassroots levels.

Along with strengthening the inspection of pandemic prevention activities, especially at hospitals, schools, supermarkets, and places of worship, it should strictly punish those who fail to abide by prevention and control regulations as well as those facilitating illegal entry into Vietnam and illegal immigrants, he said. Amid the complex developments in the region and the world, localities around the country must strictly implement the directions from the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, the Government, and the Prime Minister, especially during the National Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1) holidays and the upcoming general elections, the Deputy PM stressed.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said that HCM City is facing a high risk of another COVID-19 outbreak, stressing the need for it to work harder to prevent that from happening. Together with canceling mass gatherings, the city should also prepare more medical equipment for fighting the pandemic, he said. The minister hoped the city will help Mekong Delta localities in COVID-19 prevention and control.

Vinh Long asked to tighten COVID-19 preventive measures

Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long has asked the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long to be more vigilant against the COVID-19 pandemic, apply drastic preventive measures and restrict unnecessary mass gatherings. At a working session with local authorities on April 27, Long said that Vinh Long should prepare more medical equipment and devise scenarios to respond to unexpected events.

Alongside, the province, which is near the Vietnam-Cambodia border, should pay more attention to COVID-19 vaccinations to ensure safety for locals amid the complicated developments of the pandemic in neighboring countries and the world. Vinh Long has been provided with 5,600 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. As of April 20, 3,473 people in prioritized groups had been vaccinated. The province is scheduled to complete the first phase of vaccination on May 5.

Deputy Secretary of the Vinh Long Party Committee Bui Van Nghiem asked for more support from the Health Ministry in medical equipment and technology transfer to improve its medical service quality as well as COVID-19 prevention and control capacity.
