According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in New York, opening the general debate of UN member states at the Second Committee (Economic and Financial Committee) meeting on the theme “Sustainable development: Disaster risk reduction,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang shared the international community’s common concern over the slow progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Given the increasingly severe impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution, coupled with economic, social, and financial challenges, the Deputy Minister emphasized the urgent need to strengthen commitments to multilateralism and the 2030 Agenda through concrete and robust actions.
The head of the Vietnamese delegation underscored that it is time to transform development mindsets and models, in which placing people at the center of development must be a top priority. Ensuring social welfare, promoting inclusive growth, and protecting the environment must be given due importance, while science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation should serve as key drivers for growth.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang also called on international partners to honor their commitments, including mobilizing private capital for sustainable infrastructure development, as affirmed in the Seville Agreement, enhancing international cooperation in technology and knowledge sharing, promoting responsible technology governance, and supporting developing countries in capacity building and digital technology application in priority sectors such as agriculture and healthcare.
On this occasion, the Deputy Minister extended appreciation to international partners for their active support in helping Vietnam overcome the serious consequences caused by two consecutive typhoons - Bualoi (known in Vietnam as Typhoon No. 10) and Matmo (Typhoon No. 11).
Also on October 13, Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang, together with Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, co-chaired the opening of a photo exhibition showcasing Vietnam’s land and people, along with cultural and culinary displays and a traditional Mid-Autumn Festival space. The event, organized by the Vietnamese Mission to the UN, marked the start of the 80th General Assembly’s committee work and elections to key UN bodies, drawing the participation of over 300 ambassadors, chargés d’affaires, and representatives of UN member states’ missions.
In her opening remarks, Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang emphasized that after 80 years of national liberation, reunification, and nation-building, particularly nearly 40 years of the Doi moi (Renewal) process, Vietnam is entering a new era of development. The country has set its goal of becoming a developed, high-income nation by 2045, with science, technology, digital transformation, international integration, and legal reform as the main driving forces, while promoting the role of the private sector and ensuring public access to healthcare and education.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang noted that, with its long history, Vietnam has a deep understanding of the importance of harmonizing nature and humanity, development and preservation, tradition and modernity, as well as national strength and global trends. Accordingly, in the coming time, Vietnam will continue contributing to the promotion of international law, the culture of peace, and the strengthening of global institutions toward greater transparency and accountability. Such contributions are reflected in Vietnam’s initiatives, including hosting the Signing Ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime (scheduled for October 2025 in Hanoi) and its re-election bid to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term.
On the sidelines of the 80th General Assembly’s meetings and elections, Deputy Minister Nguyen Minh Hang also held bilateral meetings with ambassadors and heads of delegations of several countries at the UN, as well as with the Chair of the Second Committee and the Chair of the African Group, to discuss potential bilateral cooperation and coordination at multilateral forums.
