Vietnamese 10th Grader Wins Gold Medal at the International Physics Olympiad

The Ministry of Education and Training received the official results of the Vietnamese national team at the International Physics Olympiad 2022 (IPhO 2022) hosted by Switzerland from July 10-17, 2022 with the participation of 368 contestants from 77 delegations from 75 countries and territories. This information was received on July 16, 2022.

The Vietnamese national team consists of 5 students, with a 100% medal-winning rate. According to the ranking, Vietnam ranks 5th, behind: China, Romania, Korea, and the United States. This is the first year that Vietnam has a 10th grader (Vo Hoang Hai) participate and win a gold medal. 5 out of 5 Vietnamese students won medals, including 3 Gold medals, 1 Silver medal, and 1 Bronze medal.

There are three team members who are students of The High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi: Le Minh Hoang, a 12th grader; Vu Ngo Hoang Duong, an 11th grader; Vo Hoang Hai, a 10th grader who won the Gold medal.

In addition, the remaining 2 members are Nguyen Dang Phuc, a 12th grader, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, Bac Ninh Province who won the Silver Medal and Phung Cong Hieu, a 12th grader, Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, Vinh Phuc Province who won the bronze medal.

This year, for the third year in a row, the exam is held online. The Vietnamese national team competes online at the Hanoi National University of Education. The exam was thoughtfully organized, meeting all the requirements of the IPhO Organizing Committee.

In addition to physics, Vietnam also won many gold medals in other subjects at the 2022 Olympics, typically chemistry. This is the second time that every member of the Vietnamese team participating in the International Chemistry Olympiad has won the gold medal (the first time was back in 2020).

Four Vietnamese students won gold medals at the 2022 International Chemistry Olympiad: Nguyen Viet Phong (a 12th-grade student, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City); Tran Duc Minh (a 12th-grade student, Bien Hoa High School for the Gifted, Ha Nam Province); Phan Xuan Hanh (a 12th-grade student, Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted, Ha Tinh Province) and Pham Nguyen Minh Tuan (an 11th-grade student, High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences, University of Science - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

In addition, at the International Biology Olympiad, the Vietnamese team also achieved remarkable results. The Vietnamese national team consists of 4 students, and all 4 of them have won different medals : 1 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. The Vietnamese team is made up of Truong Van Quoc Dat, a 12th grader, Quoc Hoc High School for the Gifted, Thua Thien Hue Province who won the Silver Medal; Nguyen Phuc Lam, a 12th grader, Quang Trung High School for the Gifted, Binh Phuoc Province; Vo Tien Thanh, a 12th grader, Hung Vuong High School for the Gifted, Phu Tho Province; Do Trong Phuoc Nguyen, an 11th grader, Ly Tu Trong High School for the Gifted, Can Tho City, all three of them won Bronze medals.
