Vietnamese Foreign Affairs Plays a Pioneering Role in National Defense

State President Vo Van Thuong said that Vietnamese foreign affairs need to skillfully combine Party, State, and people-to-people diplomacy to play an important role in national defense.

On April 6, the Party Committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam held a conference to review the 10 years of implementation of the Resolution of 8th Party Central Committee (11th tenure) on “Strategy to Safeguard the Fatherland in the New Situation”.

Attending and speaking at the conference, State President Vo Van Thuong welcomed that the reviewing process of the Resolution in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was strictly implemented, following the plan and requirements.

President Vo Van Thuong spoke highly of the achievements in foreign affairs and diplomacy, making an important contribution to the cause of national construction and defense. Notably, the outstanding contribution is to firmly consolidate the favorable external situation for the country, maintaining a peaceful and stable environment for building and developing the country, firmly defending independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

The State President emphasized that foreign affairs and diplomacy have contributed to creating important developments in the framework of foreign relations, especially with neighboring countries, important partners, and traditional friends, thereby building a network of relations that are increasingly open, deepening, stabilizing, and maintaining the borderline of peace, friendship and cooperation.

These outstanding results have consolidated national unity and mobilized overseas Vietnamese to participate and contribute to the construction and defense of the Fatherland. Thereby, enhancing the role and position of Vietnam in the international arena, especially at important multilateral forums, mobilizing a lot of external resources for the development of the country.

President Vo Van Thuong stated that the international situation is changing complicatedly, posing new problems for foreign affairs as well as for the defense of the Fatherland. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam should continue to thoroughly grasp and implement the orientations of the resolutions and major guiding documents of the Party, skillfully combining Party diplomacy, State diplomacy, and people-to-people diplomacy.

The President further promotes the important role of foreign affairs in national defense early, from afar, since the country is not in danger. Vietnamese foreign affairs need to continue to maintain and deepen relations with other countries and partners, consolidate and strengthen political trust, and ensure national and ethnic interests on the basis of upholding the stance, principles, and consensus while maintaining flexible, creative, and clever behavior.

The State President directed foreign affairs to promote effective economic diplomacy, contributing to strengthening the country's potential. At the same time, make the most of the country's new potential and strength, further enhance the national position, strengthen research, and forecasting, and provide strategic advice to meet the requirements of national defense in the new situation.
