Vladimir Putin nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, the Russian state news agency TASS reported Thursday. Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the nomination did not come from the Kremlin.

According to TASS, a group of Russian public figures led by writer Sergey Komkov submitted the nomination, which was sent to Oslo on September 10.

"If this decision is made" — to award Putin the prize — "great, if not, it's no problem as well," Peskov said.

The nomination comes as one of Putin's most prominent critics, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, is recovering from poisoning with a Soviet-era nerve agent. Independent laboratories in Germany, France and Sweden have confirmed that he was poisoned with Novichok, a toxin that has also been used against other opponents of the regime. The Kremlin has flatly rejected the claim that Navalny was poisoned in Russia.

President Trump has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year. His nomination was submitted by a Norwegian lawmaker, who nominated him in 2018 as well, CBS News reported.

New infections reach record highs in Britain and France

More than 16,000 new infections were detected in France over the previous 24 hours, according to the national health agency, Santé Publique France. The previous record of 13,492 had been registered on September 19.

A further 52 people also lost their lives to the pandemic, bringing the country's COVID-19 death toll to 31,511.

Furthermore, the health agency stressed in its weekly report, also released on Thursday, that there had been "an exponential increase in intensive care admissions." More than 4,250 people were hospitalised for COVID-19 in France over the previous week, 718 of whom in ICU units.

In Britain, 6,632 new infections were registered on Thursday, a new record for the country.

Forty new deaths were also reported across the UK, taking the number of fatalities there to 41,902 — the highest death toll in Europe.

Public Health England Medical Director Yvonne Doyle says the figure is a "stark warning" as infections rise across all age groups.

Both France and the UK have introduced new measures the week to tackle a steady rise of infections observed since August.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) called on Thursday for countries to be quicker and more targeted in their approach to restrictive measures, EuroNews reported.

Two Super Hornets have suffered in-flight engine fires this month

A Virginia-based F/A-18F Super Hornet jet suffered an in-flight engine fire during training on Monday, the second such mishap in recent weeks, officials have confirmed.

The jet, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 11 out of Naval Air Station Oceana, experienced “a brief in-flight engine fire” near the Virginia Capes at about noon during training, Naval Air Force Atlantic spokeswoman Cmdr. Jennifer Cragg said.

The jet landed safely and there were no injuries, she said.

Monday’s Class A aviation mishap follows a similar airborne engine fire Sept. 10 on a Super Hornet assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 103 that was also flying a training mission near the Virginia Capes and assigned to NAS Oceana.

Cragg declined to say whether officials have any reason to believe the mishaps shared a similar cause, Military Times reported.

Monday’s mishap was the sixth involving a Super Hornet jet this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, according to Navy data.

That comprises half of the 12 Fiscal 2020 manned and unmanned mishaps in the Class A category, which denotes more than $2.5 million in damages, severe injury or loss of life.

Gold price prediction: Prices rebound following soft claims data

Gold prices whipsawed and moved higher, on Thursday, as the dollar eased slightly after continuing to run higher. US yields moved sideways and weighed on the dollar. The Labor Department reported that jobless claims rose more than expected. Trump was asked if he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power whatever the results, and he replied that he needed to wait and see.

Gold prices moved higher on Thursday after breaking down on Wednesday and are poised to test higher levels. Resistance is seen near the 10-day moving average at 1,925. Support is seen near the July lows at 1,779. The 10-day moving average crossed through the 50-day moving average which means a short-term downtrend is in place.

Medium-term momentum has turned negative as the MACD (moving average convergence divergence) index generated a crossover sell signal. This occurs as the MACD line (the 12-day moving average minus the 26-day moving average) crosses below the MACD signal line (the 9-day moving average of the MACD line). Short-term momentum is negative as the fast stochastic recently generated a crossover sell signal. The current reading on the fast stochastic is 14, below the oversold trigger level of 20 which could foreshadow a correction.
