WTO Director General Praise Vietnam's Practical Contributions

According to the Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva, Switzerland, the two sides discussed the results of the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14), the future work orientation of the WTO. The meeting also reaffirmed Vietnam's support for the multilateral trading system.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung emphasized Vietnam’s consistent stance, stating that Vietnam has always been an active and responsible member of the WTO, fully participating in activities, discussions, and side events, and regularly contributing to major negotiating issues.

Vietnam firmly supports the core principles of the WTO, he added, including the principle of consensus, the Most Favored Nation (MFN) status, special and differential treatment for developing countries, and ensuring a level playing field among members. Meanwhile, the WTO continues to play a particularly important role in building stable, predictable, and fair trade rules, thereby contributing to protecting the legitimate interests of its members, especially developing countries.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung also informed the WTO Director General about Vietnam's new steps in international economic integration, including its participation in several important WTO initiatives and processes.

At the meeting, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung also informed the WTO Director-General that the Vietnamese National Assembly had successfully held its Parliamentary session, electing the country's most important leadership positions.

Discussing the WTO work operation after MC14, the WTO Director-General expressed a positive assessment of Vietnam's increasingly proactive and open approach. While acknowledging and welcoming Vietnam's practical contributions, she also emphasized the importance of continuing to push for an extension of the moratorium on e-commerce tariffs, addressing the “non-violation and other circumstances” issue in the TRIPS Agreement, and maintaining the momentum of negotiations among key members. WTO member community should not be swayed by pessimistic media assessments, but should focus on substantive work to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system.

The meeting took place in an open and constructive atmosphere, reflecting a shared determination to strengthen the WTO's central role, maintain the momentum of reforms, and enhance the effectiveness of the multilateral trading system amidst ongoing global economic challenges.
