Vietnam National University in Hanoi; Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi University of Science and Technology are among the best Asia’s universities as ranked by Times Higher Education.

Three Vietnamese universities: Vietnam National University in Hanoi, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, have been included on a prestigious university rankings list.

Vietnam National University in Hanoi for the two continuous years was honored in the rankings in the 251-300 group, taking the lead in Vietnam.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology was ranked in the 351- 400 group and Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City in the 401+ group.

Among the three Vietnamese universities, Vietnam National University in Hanoi gained the highest number of points in 4/5 ranking criteria: teaching, research, citations, and international outlook, while, Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City earned the highest score in the criterion of industry income.

Compared to the ranking results in 2020, all criteria of Vietnam National University in Hanoi increased, with the criterion of citations having sharpest increase, at 8%. It was followed by research (up 7.4%), teaching (up 1.6%), industry income (up 1.6%) and international outlook (0.6%).

Times Higher Education uses a set of criteria comprising of 13 indicators belonging to five groups: teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (7.5%) and international outlook (7.5%). With such an assessment, it’s hard for universities that are not research ones or do not have strength in research to be ranked.

In 2021, as many as 551 universities from 30 countries and territories were ranked Times Higher Education, while in 2020, it was 500 universities.

The top five universities in the rankings include Tsinghua University of China, Peking University of China, National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong, and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi, was founded in 1906 and is a direct descendant of the colonial-era Universite de Indochinie.

Along with Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, it is "one of two leading multidisciplinary and multisectoral universities, tasked with producing highly qualified human resources for the rest of the country." They operate differently from the rest of Vietnam’s higher education, reporting directly to the prime minister, rather than to the education minister, and have greater autonomy.

Vietnam National University, Hanoi, took its current name and shape in 1993 with the merger of the University of Hanoi, the College of Foreign Languages and Hanoi National Union of Education. It is divided into 12 sub-sections called universities, plus two specialist schools for pupils with exceptional gifts in languages and the natural sciences.

It has the motto "Experience through Knowledge" and a vision that it is "expected to be one of the leading interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary research universities in the world, which can contribute to national industrialization and modernization."

The university is based across six campuses, the largest in Xuan Thuy.

Located in the eastern part of HCMC - the most developed urban area of Vietnam, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City was established in 1995 by the government to create a training center for undergraduate, postgraduate and science research, following high-quality and innovative multidisciplinary technology. The school serves as the core of the higher education system and dedicates to the needs of socio-economic developments.

With a total area of over 643 hectarews built under a modern university city model, the school is one of the largest educational institutions in Vietnam. The university has 26 units of training, scientific research and technology transfer, as well as eight member units: the University of Technology, University of Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, International University, University of Information Technology, University of Economics and Law, and Institute for Environment and Resources.

It has over 60.000 full-time students, with an academic team of more than 300 professors and associate professors and above 1,200 doctors. As the leading higher education system of Vietnam, the training program at the university includes 99 disciplines/groups of disciplines, ranging from technology, natural science, social sciences and humanities to economics, healthcare. It also has 105 master's degree training majors and 79 doctoral ones, according to the Times Higher Education’s website.

For many consecutive years, the school was ranked in the top 150 universities in the continent by the Quacquarelli Symonds Asia Education Organization.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology is Vietnam’s oldest and largest technical university having been founded in 1956. It was founded in buildings previously used by Indochina (now Vietnam National) University, and gave birth to the Universities of Civil Engineering and of Mining and Geology.

Five of its presidents have also been minister or deputy minister of education and/or science. Although it rebranded to the English name of Hanoi University of Science and Technology in 2010, it has still retained its Vietnamese name Dai Hoc Bach khoa Ha Noi, and the French Institut Polytechnique de Hanoi.

Describing itself as "a multidisciplinary research university in which scientific research is the main force" it declares a "commitment to human development, high-quality workforce training, scientific research, technological innovation and knowledge transfer that serves our country and global society."

Admission is highly competitive, with 33,000 students bidding for 6,680 places in June 2019. The strongest students benefit from the Elitech scheme, which includes the 5-year Excellent Engineer Training Programmes leading to a French CTI diploma.

The university has identified eight multidisciplinary research strengths including food technology, dynamic engineering and biotechnology and life sciences. It has eight National Key Laboratories and ranked second in the Nature Index for Vietnam for 2018-9.

The 14 research centers include the International Institute for Materials Science founded in 1992, which was incorporated into the university in 2004, and the Centre for Rubber Science and Technology formed in 2015.
