According to the ranking list of Times Higher Education (THE) published on March 9, among 600 universities from 48 countries, Vietnam proudly gets 3 candidates.

Vietnam National University of Hanoi ranks 251-300, the highest among three, with the given score of 24,7-26,9. Though its ranking decreases compared to the 2020 list, its given scores raise in all indicators. Vietnam National University of Hanoi has been at the top of the list for 2 continuous years.

Gaining the average score of 21,2-22,8, Hanoi University of Science and Technology holds the position of 351-400, 100 levels lower than the past year yet obtains a higher score in the indicator of Research and Teaching.

Vietnam National University of HCMC, however, holds the same position as in last year's ranking (401-500). The institution gains 18,3-21,1 in average score, in which International outlook and Research are all given higher points compared to the 2020's results.

THE’s Emerging Economies ranking uses the same 13 performance indicators used in THE’s World University Rankings, considering teaching (30%), research (30%), citation (20%) knowledge transfer (10%), and international outlook (10%). However, the performance indicators’ weightings are recalibrated to better suit emerging economy universities’ characteristics. The indicators to classify if a nation falls in the group of emerging economies are stated by FTSE Group, including Advanced emerging, Secondary emerging, and Frontier.

In 2021, the Emerging Economies University Rankings by Times Higher Education includes up to 91 Chinese universities, among which Tsinghua, Peking, Zhejiang hold the top 3 highest. Russia follows China as the country with the second-highest number of universities on the list, which is 48.

Some universities in the Southeast Asia region also hold high positions, such as Universiti Malaya (Malaysia, ranked 31), Mahidol University (Thailand, ranked 80), the University of Indonesia (Indonesia, ranked 116).

Times Higher Education World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Times Higher Education (THE) magazine. The publisher had collaborated with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) to publish the joint THE-QS World University Rankings from 2004 to 2009 before it turned to Thomson Reuters for a new ranking system from 2010–2013. The magazine signed a new deal with Elsevier in 2014 who now provides them with the data used to compile the rankings.

THE Rankings is often considered as one of the most widely observed university rankings together with the Academic Ranking of World Universities and QS World University Rankings. It is praised for having a new, improved ranking methodology since 2010; however, undermining of non-science and non-English instructing institutions and relying on subjective reputation surveys are among the criticism and concerns.
