Globally, the University of Oxford maintained its top position for the 10th consecutive year, thanks to outstanding performance in research environment. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, remained in second place. In 2026, Princeton University (USA) surpassed Harvard University to claim third place, marking its best result ever. Meanwhile, China made progress with five universities in the top 40, and India rose to second place worldwide in terms of the number of ranked universities, behind only the United States.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are trusted by students, academics, governments, and higher education experts around the world, providing a comprehensive assessment of university performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
It is the only global performance ranking that simultaneously measures the four core missions of universities: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and internationalization.
For 2026, the ranking uses 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators to ensure the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons across institutions. These indicators are based on reliable data and extensive consultations with students, scholars, university leaders, businesses, and policymakers. They are grouped into five categories: Teaching (29.5%), Research Environment (29%), Research Quality (30%), International Outlook (7.5%), and Industry (Knowledge Transfer) (4%). According to Times Higher Education, a new indicator related to study abroad currently carries a weight of zero but may be officially included in the future after the consultation process is completed.
