At the meeting, delegates reviewed the history of traditional relations between Vietnam and the former German Democratic Republic as well as the present-day Federal Republic of Germany. Vietnam established diplomatic relations with the German Democratic Republic on February 3, 1955, and with the Federal Republic of Germany on September 23, 1975. On October 3, 1990, the two German states were reunified into the present-day Federal Republic of Germany.

Currently, there are nearly 200,000 Vietnamese living in Germany, about 20% of whom have acquired German citizenship. In Bac Ninh Province alone, around 40,000 people have studied, conducted research, or worked in Germany. Bac Ninh has also implemented many effective cooperation projects with German organizations and enterprises, notably projects supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, improving the investment and business environment, enhancing environmental management capacity for sustainable development, building clean water facilities and schools, assisting poor children, children with disabilities, and victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, as well as implementing social welfare projects in remote areas. These activities have contributed to the province’s socio-economic development and strengthened the friendship bridge between the people of Bac Ninh and the people of Germany.
The Vietnam-Germany Friendship Association of Bac Giang Province (the former administrative unit, now Bac Ninh Province) was established on July 27, 1999, and currently has 12 chapters with nearly 200 members. Over the years, the Association has maintained practical activities such as providing German language classes for those wishing to study, work, or reunite with family in Germany, offering legal and procedural support, and connecting with German organizations in Vietnam such as FES, FNF, and GIZ to organize workshops and conferences, thereby contributing to attracting investment and promoting the socio-economic development of the province.
