Vietnam and Timor-Leste Promote Cooperation

On July 13 in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, Vietnamese Chargé d’Affaires Pham Binh Dam met with Deputy Prime Minister Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, who also serves as Minister for Coordinating Economic Affairs and Minister of Tourism and Environment. They discussed measures to enhance bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors and agreed to promote the implementation of practical cooperation programs in the near future.

Timor-Leste Leader Praises Vietnam's Global Influence

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Francisco Kalbuadi Lay commended Vietnam’s recent development achievements and expressed gratitude for its consistent support of Timor-Leste’s regional and international integration, particularly in relation to WTO accession and ASEAN membership. He noted that Vietnam’s experience in development and integration serves as a valuable reference for Timor-Leste’s own national progress.

The two sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in agriculture, food security, human resource development, digital transformation, tourism, connectivity, and investment promotion.

Chargé d’Affaires Pham Binh Dam reaffirmed Vietnam’s readiness to share its development experience and strengthen linkages between agencies, localities, and businesses, aligned with Timor-Leste’s priorities. He emphasized that both countries have favorable conditions to advance concrete cooperation programs, initially focusing on expert exchanges, needs assessments, personnel training, and closer business community engagement.

Looking ahead to Timor-Leste’s ASEAN chairmanship in 2029, Deputy Prime Minister Lay expressed interest in learning from Vietnam’s experience in organizing multilateral events, personnel training, protocol, logistics, communications, and inter-sectoral coordination. In response, Mr. Dam confirmed Vietnam’s willingness to share relevant expertise to help Timor-Leste enhance its capacity and contribute more effectively to ASEAN activities.

On economic cooperation, Deputy Prime Minister Lay stressed that Timor-Leste values the presence of Vietnamese enterprises and stands ready to support them in addressing challenges related to investment and business operations.

Concluding the meeting, both sides agreed to continue working with relevant agencies to identify specific areas, projects, and initiatives, laying the groundwork for a more substantive and effective Vietnam -Timor-Leste partnership.
