Nguyen Thanh Phong re-elected as Chairman of HCM City People's Committee

Nguyen Thanh Phong was re-elected as Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee for the 2016-2021 tenure, winning 100% of the vote at the first session of the 9th municipal People’s Council on June 28, cited NDO.

Born in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre in 1962, Phong has a master’s degree in economics. He is a Party Central Committee member and was the Chairman of the committee in the last tenure.

In his action plan delivered after the re-election, Phong pledged he will join the local political system to successfully implement the resolutions of the 13th National Party Congress and the 11th local Party Congress, based on the spirit of solidarity, responsibility, and creativity.

At the first meeting of the People’s Council in its ninth tenure, he was re-elected as chairman of the People’s Committee for the 2016-21 term, according to TuoiTre.

At the election of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and people’s councils at all levels for the 2021-26 term, Phong was elected as deputy of the 10th municipal People’s Council.

Nguyen Thanh Phong was born on July 18, 1962 as a native citizen of Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province.

He completed the PhD in Economics, Bachelor in Economics. Chairman of HCM City People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Phong joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on September 8, 1988.

During his career, Nguyen Thanh Phong has received Third Class Labor Medal in 2014 and Order of Cultural Merit (Bogwan) from the President of the Republic of Korea, among others.

The People's Committee

The People's Committee, which is elected by the People's Council, is the executive office of the People's Council, the State administrative organ in the locality. It is responsible for the implementation of the Constitution, the laws, the written decisions of the State organs of higher levels and the resolutions of the People's Council of the same level.

The People's Committee is organized and operate on the principle of democratic centralism.

Within their duties and powers, the People's Committee shall manage the local affairs in accordance with the Constitution, the laws and the written decisions of the State organs of higher levels, promote the right to mastery of the people, strengthen the socialist legislation, prevent and fight against bureaucratism, irresponsibility, arrogance, authoritarianism, corruption, wastefulness and other negative manifestations at the offices, among State employees and within the local administrative apparatus.
