Book Discussion on Japanese Culinary Culture Entices Hanoi Readers
A discussion on "Japanese Culinary Culture - From Perfectionism to National Identity and Social Transformation" was held at the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam on Nov. 19.
The event was attended by writer Ha Thuy Nguyen, specialty coffee expert Pham Tuan Anh, and Nguyen Duy, owner of a ramen shop in Vietnam.
At the event, speakers discussed Japanese culinary culture based on two newly-published books, one of which was "The Untold History of Ramen". The book, published by Book Hunter with sponsorship from the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, is a meticulous research by George Solt, professor of modern Japanese history. Solt, who works at the History Faculty at New York University, spent a year studying the subject during a Fellowship for Japanese Studies held by the Japan Foundation.
The book puts ramen in a whole new light, not just as a comfort food but also as a testament to a nation's ability to recover and innovate. The author uses ramen as a lens to explore broader sociopolitical themes in Japanese history, through which readers understand the historical depth and cultural meaning behind a seemingly simple bowl of noodles.
