Work relating to overseas Vietnamese has achieved many encouraging results in recent years, serving as a bridge connecting overseas Vietnamese with the homeland while promoting the strength of the great national unity bloc.

With nearly 6.5 million overseas Vietnamese living in more than 130 countries and territories, the community has carried out many practical activities in support of the homeland. The overseas Vietnamese community continues to enhance its standing and political prestige in host countries while possessing considerable strengths in economic resources, knowledge, science and technology, enabling it to join compatriots at home in continuing Vietnam's development and international integration. These achievements are the result of the persistent efforts of Vietnam's diplomatic agencies at home and abroad, which have consistently taken the lead in standing alongside and supporting overseas Vietnamese under all circumstances.

Nguyen Trung Kien, Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, said that, as the agency responsible for advising on, formulating and implementing the Party's and the State's strategic policies for overseas Vietnamese, the Committee has comprehensively carried out its work across many key areas in recent years. Among these, efforts to connect and promote the resources of overseas Vietnamese have produced outstanding results, effectively attracting not only investment capital but also intellectual resources, high-tech investment projects, and initiatives from overseas Vietnamese intellectuals, experts and entrepreneurs. These achievements also demonstrate the dedication and commitment of generations of diplomatic officials in fostering patriotism and inspiring overseas Vietnamese to contribute to the homeland while strengthening their pride in the country.

Since the beginning of 2025, Vietnamese senior leaders have held nearly 60 meetings with overseas Vietnamese. Programmes aimed at helping overseas Vietnamese reconnect with their roots, including Homeland Spring, Vietnam Summer Camp and visits by overseas Vietnamese delegations to Truong Sa, have continued to be renewed and improved in quality.

Citizen protection has also achieved many positive results, helping strengthen public confidence in the State's protection while affirming the important role of Vietnam's diplomacy amid an increasingly volatile international environment. According to Doan Hoang Minh, Director General of the Consular Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the close direction of the Party and State leadership and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citizen protection has consistently been identified as a regular priority, with the objective of protecting the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens and legal entities abroad.

Since the beginning of 2026, in response to increasingly complex international developments, including geopolitical conflicts, economic tensions and non-traditional security risks, the Consular Department has proactively coordinated closely with Vietnam's representative missions abroad to implement citizen protection measures in a comprehensive, flexible and effective manner.

Through bilateral and multilateral diplomatic channels, the Department has coordinated the provision of legal information, facilitated access to lawyers, conducted consular visits, and protected the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens overseas. In situations involving armed conflicts and political instability, emergency measures have been promptly implemented in close coordination with international organisations to evacuate, assist and protect Vietnamese citizens in affected areas.

As Vietnam's representative missions are not yet present in every locality around the world, Honorary Consuls have become an important extension of the country's diplomatic network, helping promptly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Vietnamese citizens and legal entities while connecting cooperation opportunities between Vietnam and host countries.

According to Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang, Vietnam currently has 48 Honorary Consuls operating effectively in 35 countries across all continents. Unlike career consular officers, who are officials of the Vietnamese Government, Honorary Consuls are mostly successful businesspeople with strong reputations who voluntarily support consular work and citizen protection in host countries using their own resources. Although they hold different nationalities, Honorary Consuls remain connected to Vietnam through their sincere affection, personal credibility and voluntary commitment.

Amid a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world with numerous security and safety challenges, the timely and dedicated support provided by Honorary Consuls on the ground has become a source of reassurance for overseas Vietnamese communities. This is not only a responsibility but also an expression of their affection for Vietnam and its people.

The overseas Vietnamese community is an inseparable part of the Vietnamese nation and an important resource for national construction and defence. This has consistently been a policy of the Party and the State, reflecting both a strategic vision and deep affection for Vietnamese living abroad. Building on the positive achievements made in recent years, work relating to overseas Vietnamese continues to help ensure that overseas Vietnamese truly become active partners, joining people at home in realising the aspiration of building a prosperous and happy country.

Overseas Vietnamese Youth Promote Vietnamese Culture in Paris Through the “Bonjour Vietnam” Festival Over June 13-14, the Vietnam Cultural Center in France, in collaboration with Vietnamese associations and youth groups, organized the third edition of the “Bonjour Vietnam” Cultural Festival in Paris. The event attracted a large number of overseas Vietnamese, French friends, and young Vietnamese from various countries, creating a vibrant cultural exchange space rich in Vietnamese identity.

People's Public Security Force - Ensuring the Rights of Vietnamese Citizens Abroad On June 25 in Hanoi, the Department of Foreign Affairs (Ministry of Public Security) organized a seminar titled “Ensuring the Rights of Vietnamese People Abroad - The Role of the People's Public Security Force”. The seminar was chaired by Colonel Nguyen Hoa Chi, Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs and attended by representatives from different departments, bureaus, and units within and outside the Public Security force.
