First-ever Vietnam brocade festival to be hosted in Dak Nong

The first Vietnam brocade culture festival and Dak Nong investment promotion conference will take place in the Central Highlands locality from January 5-7.

At a press conference held in Hanoi on December 11, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee To Thi Ngoc Hanh said that this is part of the activities to celebrate the 15^th founding anniversary of the province.

The festival honours the remarkable cultures of Vietnamese ethnic groups and encourages ethnic people to preserve their traditional brocade craftsmanship. It is also expected to create a venue for local artisans to exchange experience and shape the sustainable handicraft in society, Hanh highlighted.

Major events held in the framework of the festival include the exhibition of Vietnamese brocade cultural spaces, brocade weaving practice sessions, restoration of several aspects of traditional ethnic minority festivals, and art performances. A conference on brocade culture, a street festival, and a brocade fashion show are also scheduled to take place.

On the occasion, Hanh introduced the local investment promotion conference, which will be held under the theme of “Dak Nong – Investment Potential and Opportunities”.

During the event, the province will present investment decisions and licences to several businesses. It will sign cooperation deals with many foreign and domestic firms, with the expected investment of more than VND 92 trillion (USD 3.93 billion).

Brocade is traditionally made from cotton and flax yarn material found in the forest. Its patterns are dyed in natural colours.

The patterns on brocade fabric often reflect the traditions of ethnic groups. The brocade weaving tradition is preserved and inherited in each ethnic family by women.

In fact, most brocade products are fabricated by Mong locals, mostly skilful and meticulous craftspeople, in the northern mountainous provinces of Ha Giang and Lao Cai as well as others in the Central Highlands.

Handmade brocade products, both in the past and present, have been closely associated with the habits and customs of most of the Vietnamese ethnic groups. Brocade fabric, for example, serves as essentials or goods and is even used in marriages./.
