The Military-Civilian Medical Center of Phu Quy district has coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) Pediatric Cardiology & Congenital Heart Disease Society to conduct heart disease screening for more than 1,500 children on the island to early detect heart abnormalities in children, thereby having timely intervention measures, bringing inclusive health access for children in remote areas.

With the professional support of the HCMC Pediatric Cardiology & Congenital Heart Disease Society, after the first day of simultaneous examination at five different locations, the team examined 1,523 children and discovered 31 cases of cardiac abnormalities such as atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, existence of ductus arteriosus, severe mitral regurgitation, and abnormal pulmonary venous return to the heart.

Through screening, Dr. Do Nguyen Tin, chairman of HCMC Pediatric Cardiology & Congenital Heart Disease Society, said that for mild cases, children will be monitored. As for the severe cases, which need immediate treatment by surgery or intervention, they will be transferred to HCM City for free treatment.

“The HCMC Pediatric Cardiology & Congenital Heart Disease Society focuses on remote areas where modern health care is difficult to access to people so that everyone can obtain quality health care. The free heart screening and treatment activities, also help stimulate the spirit of commitment and community orientation for young doctors." Dr. Tin shared.

Also according to Dr. Duong Tin Phuc, director of the Military-Civilian Medical Center of Phu Quy district, with sick children who are indicated for surgery at HCMC Children's Hospital 1, doctors and nurses sponsors will sponsor. This activity is aimed at early detection of heart disease in children, from which timely intervention measures can be taken, bringing health opportunities to children in remote areas.

The free heart disease screening and treatment for children is a regular activity of the HCMC Pediatric Cardiology & Congenital Heart Disease Society. Since the beginning of the year, they have examined more than 2,000 children in Phu Yen and Binh Duong provinces. More than 100 children have been diagnosed with congenital heart defects, are closely supported and treated for free.

Phu Quy is about 56 nautical miles southeast of Binh Thuan mainland, with total area of 17sq.m and a population of about 30.000.

Congenital heart defects are abnormalities at a person’s heart that are present at birth, which affects the heart walls, the heart valves or blood vessels. Since the structure of the heart is negatively affected, children (and even adults) with congenital heart defects will suffer from irregular blood circulation throughout their bodies.

On average, 10.000 infants are born with congenital heart defects in Vietnam every year. 75% of those babies will need medical intervention to prevent complications in life. Unfortunately, a large number of infants with congenital heart defects live in rural areas with limited access to early diagnosis.

Those outreach screenings help to find out children with congenital heart defects and support them with medical care as early as possible.
