It has been eight consecutive years since the country embarked on the “campaign” to remove the IUU yellow card. Quy Nhon Fishing Port has early on become a pivotal “gateway” for strictly controlling all procedures related to vessels entering and leaving port. Notably, the declaration of information and traceability of seafood products has now been strongly digitalized, gradually replacing manual paperwork and bringing greater speed and transparency.

Assessing the positive changes within the community, Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of the Gia Lai Provincial Fishing Port Management Board, stated: “To date, the fishing community has developed a profound awareness of the fight against IUU fishing. Even during the Tet holidays, fishermen voluntarily and strictly comply with voyage declarations and the recording of fishing logs.”

Alongside the port management board, the Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard has also established a firm management formation. At key areas such as Quy Nhon, De Gi and Tam Quan, border guard stations and posts maintain 100% of their personnel on duty.

All vessels are subject to rigorous verification of documentation and safety equipment before setting sail. In particular, the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) is operated at maximum capacity to closely track offshore fishing boats and promptly remind vessels at risk of losing signal.

Directing operations on the ground, Lieutenant Colonel Vu Duc Tue, Commander of the Quy Nhon Port Border Guard Station, affirmed that the unit consistently upholds a spirit of strict and continuous control while at the same time creating the most favorable procedural conditions for fishermen, enabling them to confidently remain at sea and achieve high economic efficiency.

The close guidance of the authorities has become a solid pillar of support, strengthening fishermen’s respect for the rule of law. Preparing for the first voyage of the year, Nguyen No, captain of fishing vessel BD 97405, asserted: “Thanks to the dedicated support of the authorities, we feel very secure in doing business. Fishermen always remind one another to operate only within our permitted waters, absolutely not to violate foreign waters, and to comply with the law together with the State in safeguarding our seas and islands.”

The synergy between the strong sense of responsibility of frontline forces and fishermen’s commitment to lawful offshore operations is generating positive signals for the fisheries sector. Each vessel cutting through the spring waves now carries not only the aspiration for sustainable fisheries development, but also serves as a resilient “living milestone” protecting the sacred maritime sovereignty of the Fatherland.
