The event was held as part of the "Vietnamese Families with Lao and Cambodian Students Studying in Ho Chi Minh City" program, initiated by the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. It also commemorated the 25th anniversary of Vietnamese Family Day (June 28, 2001-June 28, 2026) and the 50th anniversary of the official renaming of Saigon-Gia Dinh as Ho Chi Minh City (July 2, 1976-July 2, 2026).

According to information from the Laos-Cambodia Student Dormitory, in 2026 the program connected 102 Vietnamese families with 177 international students, including 140 from Laos and 37 from Cambodia, who are studying at 16 universities and academies across Ho Chi Minh City. These families have accompanied the students throughout their academic journey and daily lives, becoming a "second home" for many young people during their time studying away from home.
According to Tuoi Tre newspaper, Nguyen Duc Trung, Standing Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Union of Students' Ho Chi Minh City chapter, stated at the event that the Family Day celebrates the cherished values of the Vietnamese family while providing an opportunity for Vietnamese families and Lao and Cambodian students to meet, interact, and strengthen their bonds.
Nguyen Duc Trung noted that through activities designed to foster close connections and mutual engagement, the program helps nurture the special solidarity and friendship among Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. It also strengthens ties among the younger generations of the three countries, laying a foundation for future cooperation.
This year's Family Day featured a variety of cultural exchange and experiential activities, including a flower-arranging competition themed "Flowers of the three nations," a traditional cooking contest showcasing Vietnamese, Lao, and Cambodian cuisine, team-building games, karaoke exchanges, activities exploring the history of friendship among the three nations, and other interactive programs designed to strengthen relationships between Vietnamese host families and international students.
The Laos-Cambodia Student Dormitory in Ho Chi Minh City is currently home to 1,002 scholarship students sponsored by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee. During the first six months of 2026, the dormitory organized and co-organized numerous friendship exchange activities while providing material and emotional support for students from Laos and Cambodia.
According to the Organizing Committee, the "Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia Family Day" is one of the flagship activities aimed at promoting people-to-people exchanges, spreading the humanistic values of the Vietnamese family, and further strengthening the traditional solidarity and friendship among Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
