Professor Avieli, a cultural anthropologist with extensive expertise in food and tourism studies, has conducted ethnographic research in Hoi An, Vietnam, since 1998.
One of Professor Avieli’s most notable works is his book “Rice Talks: Food and Community in a Vietnamese Town” (2012, Indiana University Press). This ethnographic study of Hoi An offers an in-depth examination of the complex relationship between food, community, and local culture.
During the talk, Professor Avieli shared his rich experiences and in-depth observations on Vietnamese culinary life, highlighting the role of meals in community building and how food reflects cultural identity and social dynamics, including gender issues. He also offered insights into the potential for developing cultural tourism in Vietnam, particularly through its cuisine.
The event was not only an opportunity to deepen understanding of Vietnamese culture but also contributed to fostering people-to-people exchanges between Vietnam and Israel, especially as the two countries continue to expand cooperation across various fields.
The talk took place in a warm and open atmosphere, featuring lively questions and discussions between the speaker and participants.
IWC Israel is a non-profit, non-religious, and non-political organization dedicated to fostering connections between international women and the local community in a friendly and supportive environment.
Founded in 1969, the Club now has over 250 members representing approximately 45 countries.
