As reported by the National Open Immunization Program, on March 11, 5 more localities in Vietnam deployed vaccination against COVID-19, namely Hai Phong, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, and Long An.

As of late afternoon on March 11 - the vaccination program's fourth day, 630 more people were safely injected with the vaccine. Thus, after 4 days of deploying the National Open Immunization Program, Vietnam has given the COVID-19 vaccine to a total of 1.585 people, most of whom are health workers directly working with COVID-19 patients.

In that 4 days, there were 1.585 recipients receiving the vaccine in 13 vaccination sites of 9 cities/provinces, including Hai Duong (293 recipients), Hanoi (163 recipients), Hung Yen (69 recipients), Bac Ninh (108 recipients), Bac Giang (187 recipients), Hai Phong (61 recipients), HCMC (474 recipients), Gia Lai (200 recipients) and Long An (30 recipients).

According to the National Open Immunization Program, 4 more people were reported to have level 2 anaphylaxis, all of whom were timely treated and are still in monitoring. Currently, their health situation is back to the normal stage. Besides, the program reported several other cases that suffer-normal side effects after injection.

Thus, so far, Vietnam has recorded a total of 6 cases that faced level 2 anaphylaxis after being injected with the pCOVID-19 vaccine, all of whom were timely treated. Many others have been reported to have after-injection side effects such as muscle pain, fatigue, fever, headache, chills, painful swelling at the injection site, nausea, which are already warned after using the AstraZeneca vaccine.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Duong Thi Hong, Deputy Director of National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, Deputy Head of the National Open Immunization Program's Standing Committee, global reports showed that after vaccination, more than 10% of recipients would have these below 4 kinds of side effects.

The first is headache, fatigue, restlessness, itching at the injection site. The second is muscle pain, irritability. The third is fever, chills, mild common fever, and fever over 38 degrees. The fourth is joint pain, nausea. Among them, the first group is the most common. 1-10% of the recipients find redness and swelling at the injection site.

Serious reactions such as anaphylaxis, post-injection delaying hypersensitivity reactions have not yet been fully reported by WHO. To monitor those reactions, the Ministry of Health asks vaccine recipients to stay at the vaccination sites for 30 minutes after getting injected and continue monitoring for the first 24 hours at home.

“Shock reaction not only happens 30 minutes to 1 hour after injection but can also come later in the first day. Therefore, the vaccinated people should be very careful. If they find any discomfort, irritability, sweating, chills, rash, or any symptoms, then they need to contact medical facilities immediately to be treated in a timely manner,” recommended Assoc.Prof Hong.

It is known that right from this week, 13 provinces in the first injection program are urgently organizing training and preparing to expand the implementation area. Safety assurance continues to be strictly implemented at all sites.
