On the afternoon of November 30, the Head of CAAV said that it has collaborated with airline carriers to launch 33 flights per week to bring home Vietnamese citizens. The program is expected to last from December 1, 2020 to January 15, 2021, VNExpress reported.

The Consular Department under the Vietnam Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be responsible for collecting the list of returnees and then submit it to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control. After gaining the Committee’s approval, these flights will be operated, Thang said.

The flights will only land at seven airports namely Van Don (Quang Ninh), Da Nang and Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa), Can Tho, Phu Quoc, Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), and Phu Cat (Quy Nhon).

The arrivals will have to pay airlines for all expenses including airfares, quarantine at hotels, transportation from airports to hotels, three meals/ day, and COVID-19 tests.

Upon landing in Vietnam, entrants will move to selected hotels, pay for services, and undergo the COVID-19 tests here. They will be tested twice after entry and before the compulsory 14-day quarantine period expires (if the first test result is negative).

Vietnam has suspended all international commercial flights from early April to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Now, several airline carriers have resumed the operation, but they only transport cargo and passengers from Vietnam to other countries. Meanwhile, the flights entering Vietnam mainly include Vietnamese citizens, foreigners with diplomatic passports, foreign experts, or highly skilled workers. Everyone has to be quarantined for 14 days on arrival.

In September, the government greenlighted the Transport Ministry to reopen flights to China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Laos, and Cambodia. Vietnam also conducted two pilot commercial flights from South Korea’s Seoul to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

The Ministry of Health said that it is drafting detailed guidelines on entry, medical surveillance, and quarantine for passengers on commercial flights.

On November 30, Vietnam reported the first domestic COVID-19 case after three months, ending the country's 87-day streak without a community transmission.

The latest cases take Vietnam’s COVID-19 tally to 1,347 cases, of these 35 died from the disease. Three who died after they had been confirmed Covid-19 free have not been counted among the recoveries or the deaths.

Over 16,000 people are quarantined nationwide at present.
